    Notes:

In early Madison County records, there are Gore, Adair, Landers, Sailors, Hudson, Lane who all end up in Paulding County later on. However, these records in Family Search require being at the FHC or an affilliate library.

There are several useful pages in Franklin Garrett's Notes on Old Families of Dekalb & Fulton Counties 1875-1932.
    p. 19 - Hiram Casey - captain of the district where the Hudsons are found in 1850. Irish immigrant. Came to Dekalb from Madison, Georgia.
    p. 32 - Wesley Hudson burial
    p. 79-80 - Wesley Hudson - owned most of Simsville.

Lottery: It appears that Wesley Hudson was a fortunate drawer in the 1827 land lottery in Jackson Co., GA. I need to confirm this.

Democrat Meeting: Westly Hudson is listed as a delegate from Cook's District of Fulton County to the Fulton Democratic Meeting according to the Atlanta Weekly Intelligencer, 12 May 1859, p. 1

Letters of Guardianship: Wesley Hudson and William Cannon apply for letters of guardianship for the persons and property of George R. Cash and Allison Cash, orphans of George W. Cash, dec'd. (Southern Confederacy newspaper, August 24, 1862, p. 4)

CENSUS: Wesley Hudson is not found in a line-by-line search of the 1870 Paulding County Census.

    Overview

Wesley Hudson was born in SC around 1808. At some point, he (and maybe his family) moved to Georgia. Wesley Hudson appears in Georgia by the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Landers in 1831. It is not clear where in Georgia he first landed, or where he was married. By 1840, he is found in Dekalb County, GA. Wesley Hudson married Elizabeth (Betsy Ann) Landers in 1831 and they had twelve children. Throughout the 1850’s and 1860’s, Wesley bought and sold land in the 14th and 17th districts of Dekalb County, which became Fulton County in 1853. This land was primarily located to the west of present day Georiga Tech and just to the west of the Fulton County Prison and Animal Control. Sometime between 1862 and 1866, Wesley and family moved from Fulton County to Paulding County, Georgia. They located in the Pumpkinvine community, just to the south of Dallas, Ga, along present day GA 120. Betsy Ann died in 1884. And Wesley died in October of 1889.

    Connected Families

In 1850, Wesley appears in Dekalb County surrounded by other Hudsons, many of whom are likely to be related. In the Casey's District, there are several Hudson families. In particular, we find in dwelling 30, Notley Hudson (age 32), in dwelling 36, Catharine Hudson (age 30, in the household of Zilpha Wood), dwelling 92, Wesley Hudson (age 42),dwelling 94, Jane Hudson (age 60), dwelling 95, David Hudson (age 25). Farther along, in dwelling 111, we find Calvin Hudson (age 21). In addition to the families named Hudson, there are other related families here. In dwelling 93, Laura W. Carter, daughter of Wesley Hudson is listed with her husband Nelson. In dwelling 98, Rosanna Leachman is listed with her husband Matthew. According to the IGI, there is a marriage record in Jackson Co., Georgia in 1839 for Matthew Leachman and Rosiana Hudson. It would make sense that that Jane Hudson is the matriarch of this group and that at least Wesley, Notley, David are all her sons. Maybe. Or maybe they are cousins. In any case, they appear to be connected.

By 1860, in addition to these families, we also find a Giles Hudson and a Manning Hudson close at hand that could be connected as well. Manning Hudson appears to move into Campbell County, so maybe he’s not quite as connected.

Rhoda Hudson married John G. Wood in 1866 in Paulding County. However, there is a John G Wood enumerated in 1850 just a few dwellings away from Wesley Hudson in the household of Elias Wood. This could well be another connection.

David Hudson married an Elizabeth Wood in 1845 in this district. She did not live long and David remarried in 1848. If it could be shown that both John G. and Elizabeth were from the same family, this would help with showing some kind of connection between David’s family and that of Wesley. It is known that David moved on to Alabama in about 1855.

Clearly, all of these Hudson families are somehow connected. They also intertwine with the neighbor families. More research is required to sort out the ties. The fact that all Dekalb County records prior to 1842 were lost in a fire hampers our ability to trace this more efficiently.

On the Landers side, there are some connections floating around as well that I will mention, though these will be followed in more depth in the Landers section. In 1860, Rebecca Landers, age 55, is enumerated with Wesley's family. After some confusion over the relation ship to Rebecca, the 1880 census shows her listed as an aunt, presumably Elizabeth’s aunt. And she is listed as single, so perhaps she is a spinster sister to Elizabeth’s father.

    Names

There has been some confusion over Wesley’s name. The tradition passed along in the Arkansas branch of the family was that his name was George Wesley Hudson. However, his tombstone, which was placed in the 1990’s by Howard Lane of Dallas, GA, reads John Wesley Hudson.Wesley himself is always referred to as just Wesley in any documents found to date. He confounds the problem somewhat by naming two sons after himself: John Wesley who went to Arkansas, and George Wesley who remained in Dallas. It seems likely that George Wesley was also called Wesley during his life. That would lend some credence to Wesley’s true name being George Wesley. However, since he himself was always called Wesley, until this can be resolved, he will be referred to as Wesley.

    Pumpkinvine Baptist Church

One of the main places where Wesley’s name can be traced is in the church minutes for Pumpkinvine Baptist Church. Over a period of some 20 years, the Hudsons appear quite frequently. Initially, when Wesley joins the church, he is referred to as Wesley Hudson. A year later,in 1867, a J.W. Hudson takes a position on the church committee. This could have been Wesley’s son, John Wesley, since he was of age and had not yet left for Arkansas, but in light of the fact that Wesley was still around, it seems much more likely to refer to him. Most of the other references to him are clearly to W. Hudson or Wesley Hudson and are pretty much unambiguous, since his son was called John and his younger son, George Wesley, called Wesley, was not yet of age.

Wesley Hudson served on a number of church committees and was often called upon to visit and talk with church members who had gone astray and then to act to either include or exclude them from the church. He, himself, became the target of this same kind of activity. On 14 Feb 1874, Wesley Hudson acknowledged before the assembly that he had been drinking too much. Apparently this was resolved, since he was not excluded from the fellowship.

On 16 Dec 1876, Wesley Hudson and Matilda Moore were excluded from the church for living in sin. At first, I believed this must be a clue that Elizabeth and Rebecca had died and left Matilda and Wesley alone. But, the 1880 census shows both of them alive and well. I do not understand quite what would have caused this exclusion without also estranging Elizabeth. I believe at that time that Wesley moved his membership to Dallas Baptist Church. On 17 Nov 1877, the church received a petition for restoration from J.W. Hudson. John Wesley Hudson had already gone to Arkansas by this time, so this is somewhat confusing. Wesley had been excluded from the fellowship and would need a letter of restoration before he could transfer his letter of membership to another church. But, if this is a reference to Wesley,it goes back to the confusion over his name.

According to Franklin Garrett's Necrology, at one time, Wesley Hudson owned all of the property around the present (1932) site of Simsville in Fulton Co. More interestingly, Garrett describes the origins of the City of Atlanta, grown up around the "Terminus" of the Western &Atlantic Railroad. Wesley Hudson is listed as one of the pioneers in the area to sell land for the initial right-of-way from the railroad's crossing of the Chattahoochee River to its Terminus in Land Lot 78, District 14, approximately at the current intersection of Foundry St.and the W&ARR.

Based on the 1830 census, assuing Wesley & Elizabeth did marry in 1831, then they were probably in Madison in 1830. William is the only Hudson in the county where Wesley fits. John C. Landers, a name we keep coming back to, could be her father. But she also fits in Sarah Landers household.

    Birth:
A letter to John Wesley Hudson in 1899 confirms Wesley's birthdate

    Residence:
In order for Wesley to draw in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, he was required to be 18 years old and a resident of Georgia for at least the preceding three years. Since Wesley was a fortunate drawer in the 1827 lottery, he must have been in Georgia by 1824. Likewise, he had to be 18 years old in 1827, and therefore born by 1809.

    Possessions:
Wesley Hudson of Jackson County, Georgia, Roger's District, was a fortunate drawer in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. He drew lot 8, District 5, Section 1 (Lee County).

    William Hudson, agent
for Wesley Hudson, Madison County, 200 acres 3rd class, Watercourse B.R., granted to Gore, adjoining McRee, total tax 28 cents.

The fact that William Hudson is listed as an agent for Wesley Hudson might suggest that William is Wesley's father or other close relative (since he is the one paying taxes for him) and that Wesley is out of the area at tax time.

    Possessions:
DEED: 24 Oct 1835. Wesley sold the plot of land he purchased from Notley Gore. In fact, the deeds were recorded simultaneously. I believe this is when he moved to Dekalb County from Madison

    Possessions:
DEED: Wesley Hudson sold a right of way for a railroad grade with average width of 66 feet to Western & Atlantic Railroad. This right of way was located in lot 150, District 17, Dekalb County and was sold for the sum of $62. This land was part of the right of way for the W&A RR from the Chattahoochee River to the original "Terminus" of the railroad near present-day Five Points in downtown Atlanta. Right of way was purchased from eight people for the original railway. This purchase was part of the original formation of the city that was to become Atlanta. Today, this land is located along the western side of the campus of Georgia Tech in midtown Atlanta, between Techwood Drive and Marietta St., north of North Avenue.

Wesley Hudson's sale of land to the W&ARR is noted in an Atlanta Constitution on 10 Aug 1894 as the State of Georgia & W&A RR seek a restraining order against the Southern railway for unauthorized connection to the W&A on the land sold by Wesley.

Deed records for Dekalb County were destroyed in 1842. The only deeds prior to that are ones that were re-recorded.

He is enumerated here as Wiley rather than Wesley, but he is the only Hudson in the area where he owned land and next door to his presumed brother-in-law, Hosea Maner.

RELIGION: Wesley Hudson was active in the Pumpkinvine Baptist Church, Paulding Co., Ga. He joined by letter of transfer on 22 July 1866.By 1867, a J.W. Hudson was appointed to the church committee. This could be a reference to Wesley's son, John Wesley, who would have been of age by that time. In general, when referring to Wesley in the church minutes, he is called W. Hudson or Wesley Hudson. However, one other notable occasion refers to an ambiguous J. W. Hudson. In July 1867, Wesley was appointed delegate to a general meeting. 14 Feb 1874 he made an acknowledgement to the church for drinking too much. 16 Dec 1876 he Wesley was charged with adultery and dismissed . (also charged Malinda Moore with the same). Shortly after this, Wesley moved back to Atlanta.

    Died:
DEATH: His death is noted in the Paulding New Era newspaper on 25 Oct 1889. He fell, cut his head on a fence and died. The story is recounted as follows: "Uncle Wesley Hudson of this county departed life last Wednesday night at nine o'clock. He fell against the fence the day before and received the wound on his head that caused his death and was interred at the Lane grave yard yesterday evening. The deceased was over 80 years old and the writer spent a part of the day with him last Saturday and he remarked that he knew his time here was very short and said further that he had decided for some time to live as near in the path of duty as he could and to do all of the good that he could but we did not know that his time was so short. He was everybody's friend but a special friend of the writer and we are sad on account of his departure."

    Buried:
Wesley Hudson has a Confederate headstone that is incorrect on almost every count - birth year, death year, and name are all incorrect. The unit he served with also appears incorrect.

BURIAL: Wesley is buried in the Lane Cemetery, just off Pumpkinvine Rd., GA 120, south of Dallas, GA. Horace Lane, in the 1980's, did much work to rehabilitate the cemetery. In doing this, he placed new stones on the graves of Wesley and Betsy Hudson. Owing to his confusion over Wesley Hudson's name, the name on the stone is incorrectly listed as John Wesley Hudson.

    Notes:

RESIDENCE: 1867 - In 1867, William, John W. and Wesley all signed loyalty oaths (by their mark). The loyalty oath that they signed is reproduced as follows: "I, William Hudson, do solemnly swear in the presence of Almighty God that I am a citizen of the state of Georgia;that I have resided in said state for 12 months next preceding this this day and now reside in the county of Fulton in said state; that I am 21 years old, that I have not been disfranchised for participation in any rebellion or civil war against the United States; that I have never been a member of any State Legislature, nor held any executive or judicial office in any state and afterwards engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States or given aid and comfort to the enemies thereof; that I have never taken an oath as a member of Congress of the United States or as an officer of the United States,or as a member of any State Legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state to support the Constitution of the United States and afterwards engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States or given aid and comfort to the enemies thereof; that I will faithfully support the Constitution and obey the laws of the United States and will to the best of my ability encourage others to do so. So help me God." Interestingly, even though all of these men (and most of the others who made these oaths) were educated and could read and write, the oaths were signed by their mark, presumably to maintain some level of plausible deniability.

RESIDENCE: 1870 - William I. Hudson appears in an Atlanta City Directory. His residence is listed as Rock St., at the southeast corner of Mangum. His occupation is listed as a train hand for the W&ARR.

NOTE: 44 Victoria St. was near the corner of Victoria and Mangum St., just a couple of blocks north of Jones Ave. This is the area has been redeveloped and the streets have disappeared. It is just a few blocks north of the Georgia World Congress Center.

RESIDENCE: 1871 - William I. Hudson appears in an Atlanta City Directory. His residence is listed as Mangum St., his business address is Thurmond and Rock. His occupation is listed as a fireman for the W&ARR.

RESIDENCE: 1874 - Irving W. Hudson appears in an Atlanta City Directory. His residence is listed as 44 Victoria St.

RESIDENCE: 1879 - William I. Hudson appears in an Atlanta City Directory. His residence is listed as 44 Victoria St. and his occupation is listed as conductor for the W&ARR.

RESIDENCE: 1880 - William I. Hudson appears in an Atlanta City Directory. His residence is listed as 44 Victoria St. and his occupation is listed as conductor for the W&ARR.

RESIDENCE: 1881 - William I. Hudson appears in an Atlanta City Directory. His residence is listed as boarding at 178 Luckie St. and his occupation is yard conductor for the W&ARR.

Irvin Hudson is listed in the 1860 census as a schoolteacher. By 1880, he is listed as working for the Western & Atlantic RR. He is also called William more frequently than Irvin by this point.

Garrett's Necrology lists him as a railroad man in Atlanta and says that he died in Cobb Co.

Assuming the William I. Hudson who lives very near to Wesley is this William, in 1880, he is shown with an additional daughter and a John R. Pair who is listed strangely in the house. I am more inclined to believe this family is the right one than the 1860 family.

THIS IS NOT OUR WILLIAM. In the 1910 census, William J Hudson is listed as boarding in the home of Joseph Lee in Marietta, Cobb Co.,GA. The home is located on Locust St., near Church St. William is listed with a wife, Virginia. There are some inconsistencies between this and previous census records. The recorder lists William and Virginia as having been married 40 years and having no children. However, in an earlier census, I find William and a wife identified as Mary E in the home with several children (not yet recorded here). I would expect that the data provided to the census enumerator in 1910 was in error and provided by someone besides William and his wife.

Since William I kind of disappears, perhaps we should check railroad records.

Since in his last known residence, William is shown as a boarder, perhaps his wife has died between 1880 and 1881.

There is a William J. Hudson in Cobb County, buried in Citizen's Cemetery in Marrietta - Capt in the 7th Ga Inf, Co I. Tombstone says 1834-1911. That fits with William I., but it is not likely to be him. There is no evidence that William Irvin is really William J or that William Irvin was an officer. On the other hand, William died in Cobb County. And his brother John W. served in the 7th Ga. Inf.

Throughout 1862, a W. I. Hudson is listed as tax receiver and tax collector for Fulton County in the Atlanta Weekly Intelligencer. Either he served in the Confederacy or he served as tax collector, but not both, since they overlap.

    Misc:
    Petit Jury #1, sworn Oct 11, 1858
Juror No. 1. - Erwin Hudson
Juror No. 7. - William Hudson

William could be either of these people. There is an additional William J. Hudson in the records at this time that could well be confused with William I. Hudson.

    Residence:
William paid a poll tax and had no taxable land or property in 1859.

    Census:
The W.I. Hutson in this enumeration, I believe to be the correct one, but am not absolutely positive. He and his wife are both listed as born in SC, while I know that William Irvin was born in Fulton. However, he is the only Hudson in the district where I am confident that he lived.

Family/Spouse: Mary E.. Mary was born in 1834 in South Carolina, United States; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Silas appears to have been named for a neighbor. In the 1850 census, just a few dwellings removed from Wesley Hudson was a Silas N. Norton. Since Silas, son of Wesley, was born in 1836, this would lend supportfor there being some sort of connection between these families atleast that far back.

    Notes:

J.W. Hudson served on first Bodcaw school board, 1896

J.W. Hudson was appointed to the church committee at Pumpkinvine Baptist Church, Paulding County, Ga. on 23 Mar 1867. He was listed in the church minutes as CC, conference chair, until 25 Jan 1868. It is possible that this is a reference to his father, but typically in these church minutes, his father his noted as Wesley or W. Hudson without any other initial or name. However, there are notable exceptions to this.

Around 1870, John Hudson and his best friend, John Gann, came west from Paulding County, Georgia to Nevada County, Arkansas. In Arkansas, the two friends married aunt and niece (Millie Almand and Charlotte Armour, half-sister of Millie's mother).

According to his obituary, J.W. Hudson was a member of the Masons in Arkansas. Perhaps his father was as well in Georgia.

    Birth:
J.W. Hudson was born in Terminus, Georgia, which later became Marthasville and then Atlanta, Georgia.

    Military:
MILITARY: In John W. Hudson's service record, there is a small confusion as to exactly when and where he enlisted. There are cards in the service jacket for John W. Hudson, Co B, 7th Georgia Infantry and for John W. Hudson, Co F, 7th Georgia Infantry. I suspect that this is the result of a reorganization in the field.

It appears that J.W. Hudson enlisted in Co. B, 7th Georgia Infantry on 31 May 1861 in Atlanta. The unit then marched to Virginia where it was reorganized in July of 1861. Consulting the regimental histories might be helpful in this regard.

Served under General Lee in Civil War. Was at Appomattox. Member of Co. "B", 7th Georgia Regiment of Georgia Infantry. He enlisted in May 1861 and was paroled at Appomattox in April, 1865, having served the entire war.

John W. Hudson enlisted in Co. B, 7th Georgia Infantry as a Private on 31 May 1861 at Atlanta, Georgia for a term of one year. (He ended up serving for the duration of the war.) On July 18, 1861, he was found in Co F of the same regiment, enlisting there in Winchester, Virginia.

During July, August, September, and October 1861, he was recorded as Absent - Sick. He is listed on the register of the General Hospital at Orange Court House, Virginia on 21 Oct 1861 with remittent fever. On 25 October 1861, he is again found on a register of the General Hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia for intermittent fever but returned to duty on 4 Nov 1861.

John W. Hudson is listed on the regimental return for Co. B, 7 Regt Georgia Infantry for November 1861.

On a register of the Medical Director, Army of the Potomac at Manassas Junction, Virginia, 28 Nov 186, it is noted that if his disability is such as to warrant his discharge from the service, transfer him to the General Hospital at Warrenton for that purpose. He appears on the register of Chimborazo Hospital No. 1 in Richmond, Virginia, admitted on 29 Nov 1861 and transferred to Huguenot Springs. He returns to duty on 6 Dec 1861, on register of the C.S.A. hospital at Farmville, Virginia.

He was recorded as Present for January & February 1862 and is listed as 2 Corporal.

For March & April 1862, J.W. Hudson is listed as present and and promoted to 4th Sgt on 22 March 1862.

For May & June 1862, he is recorded as present with Sergeant pay due until 12 May, but listed as a Private again.

For the term June 30 to Oct 31, 1862, J.W. Hudson is listed as present, 4th Sgt, and promoted to 3rd Sgt on 1 Oct 1862. He is listed as present for Nov & Dec 1862. For Jan & Feb 1863, he is listed as absent, on furlough since 2 Feb., but present again for March & April 1863.

John W. Hudson appears on a receipt roll for the third quarter of 1864 for clothing.

On 21 Jun 1863, John W. Hudson was elected 3rd Lieutenant and is listed as present for May & June of that year. He is listed as present for July, August, September, October 1863, January-April 1864, July-October 1864. A roster dated 9 Oct 1864, near Chafin's Bluff, shows that J.W. Hudson was 2nd Lieut and was elected to that position on 21 Jun 1863.

John W. Hudson is found on a hospital muster roll at the 2nd Division Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on 31 August 1863.

He is found again in the same hospital, admitted on 29 August 1864 with a reason of "V.S. R. arm". He was furloughed for 40 days starting on Sept 15, 1864. Another register listing from the Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia shows he was admitted on 28 Aug 1864 with "v.s. R. arm min B" and was furloughed for 30 days on 15 Sept 1864. A register of the Medical Director's Office, Richmond, Virginia shows him in Jackson Hospital until 17 Sept 1864 with a remark "Griffin, Ga". Perhaps a destination during furlough.

Through November, December 1864, January, February 1865, he is listed as present on company muster rolls.

John W. Hudson, 2nd Liety, Co B, 7th Ga Inf, is shown on a list of signatures and on a list of prisoners of war paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, 9 April 1865 and in camp at that place on 20 Apr 1865.

    Census:
John W. Hudson appears to be in the household of James Hudson, who has a son named Wesley. My supposition is that this may be a cousin, but we need to establish a family to connect Wesley to the father of James.

Additionally, there is a 14 year-old Martha Morris, who might also be related.

    Notes:

This daughter of F.P. Hudson is sometimes seen as Vinona, Vinora, or Venorah. Her tombstone says Venorah. In the 1900 census, she is listed as Norah.

As far as children go, the 1900 Census reports that George and Norah have been married for 10 years. That is in conflict with the marriage record we found in 1895. There is a son, aged 12 named Robert in the 1900 census as well. He is listed as a son of George Matthews. It is possible that he is a son from a previous marriage. But, the census reports that Norah has had only child and that child is still alive. If that is the case, where is the child? The 1910 census clears this mystery up somewhat in that it says that Venorah has had no children. So Robert must be a child of George's from a previous marriage. He is also listed as having been married twice.

    Notes:

The Social Security claim made for Eva Lou Hudson records that she could have been also known as Eva Lou Denton, Eva Lou Moore, and Eva Loucinda Bennett. It has her birth date off by 2 years and puts her birth place in the wrong county. It also lists her mother as Eva B Kingwell instead of Kimball.

    Birth:
While her tombstone says she was born in 1930, the fact that she is in the census in 1930 means it must have been in 1929 (as calculated by the census).

Additionally, a Social Security claim was made that suggested her birth date was 8 Oct 1927, which is also wrong. That claim put Prescott in Hempstead County, too.

    -------------------------

This is a short autobiography that Papaw wrote for himself.

    Hudson Wren
    Wilson, Arkansas

    Born: July 18, 1906
Hill farm in Nevada County, Arkansas (Prescott, County Seat).
    Graduated: Prescott High School
College: University of Arkansas - degree in Agriculture
    Football - University of Arkansas Razorbacks 1927 & 1928

Upon graduation entered Vocational Agricultural field working with High School boys. First job was the establishment of a new Vocational Agricultural Department at the Portland High School (Ashley County) Southeast Arkansas Delta area. [1930]

Three years later (1932) came to Wilson, Arkansas as Vocational Agricultural Instructor. Worked closely with the management of Lee Wilson & Company.

In the spring of 1933, the Roosevelt Administration came into into office and implemented a program to plow up each third row of cotton because of oversupply and low prices. While still in Vocational Agriculture was pressed into temporary duty as inspector for Federal plow-up program. Traveled Northeast Arkansas where got to view much fine farm land and meet many wonderful people. This program known as Agricultural Adjustment Act was the forerunner of ASCS.

In 1934 succeeded Stanley D. Carpenter as County Agent of South Mississippi County. At that time the Federal Agricultural Adjustment Program was administered by the County Agricultural Extensions Service.

Shall never forget some of the headaches incident to this early program, especially in 1934 when there was a difficulty in securing the "Bankhead Certificates", a type of permit necessary for a farmer to have before he could either gin or sell his cotton. The crop was early (August) and the certificates were late (September). Farmers were broke and disgruntled because of the unnecessary delays cause by Government red tape. Such was indeed a critical time for the farmer. All were greatly in dept, the creditors were pushing them for payment, there was a good cotton crop in the field opening fast, but the Government procedure was obstructing the normal operation procedure.

With the help of an excellent County Committee: J.F. Thompkins: Burdette; Rufus Branch, Pecan Point; and Clay Ayers, Osceola; South Mississippi County did manage to be the second county in the State to receive their allotment of "Bankhead Certificates" and were able to gin the cotton slightly late, but much ahead of any other group of farmers except Pulaski County.

    A little nostalgia:
At the time of the plow-up campaign of 1933 the idea was so novel that farmers could not imagine such action. Cotton was celling for 4c-5c per pound. "The bank holiday" of March 1933 was fresh on the minds of everyone. Banks were going broke, Insurance Companies were being forced to foreclose on mortgages, entrepreneurs were jumping from tweleve story buildings, as this county was in the depths of the greatest depression it had known.

Henry A. Wallace was Secretary of Agriculture and reluctantly he decided to take some remedial action after the Plow-Up was announced and it became evident that it was going to be generally accepted the price of cotton increased from 4c-5c per pound to 5c-6c per pound. Not much in dollars but that one cent represented a 20% advance. By 1934, the time of the "Bankhead Certificates", the price of cotton had increased to a whopping 7c per pund - $35.00 per bale.

In 1935 the USDA began a rather comprehensive action program in this County. USDA leased 12,000 acres of farm land and moved "Rural Rehabilitation clients" onto this tract in an effort to help see them through the depression. At about the same time the Federal Government bought 16,000 acres of cutover timber land and started a project of development. This was the beginning of Dyess, Arkansas having taken its name from W.R. Dyess of Luxora, Arkansas who was the guiding spirit behind this undertaking.

[Little Rock] In the fall of 1935 I joined USDA as State Farm Management Specialist. Later became the Regional Farm Management Specialist. In 1938 I became Arkansas State Director of Farm Security Administration within USDA. During the ten years I was with USDA I held the positions of Assistant Regional Director FSA, at Raleigh, N.C., and later Regional (seven southeastern states) Director of War Food Administration at Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1945 I returned to Mississippi County as a practical farm operator. My position was Unit Manager of 12,000 acres of land in the vicinity of Marie, Arkansas. This involved taking over a tract of land which had been leased out and allowed to grow up by the former operator. All equipment had to be purchased at a time of strictest rationing and controls. This involved bartering, trading, and even dismantling a railroad, trading the steel to a farm implement company for farm tractors with which to farm the land.

In 1951 I became Vice President of Lee Wilson & Company, a diversified agricultural-industry operation in South Mississippi County, with operations in Crittenden County, Arkansas and Elko County, Nevada. There are sixteen departments or divisions within Lee Wilson & Company, representing a wider diversity of interests.

Just to cause more confusion, Norvelle & Mildred, who presumably were familiar with these people and not with the census records, said that Ruby Purtle married first Dendy and then Spears. However, there is also a Ruby Dendy, age 11, found in the 1920 census of Jackson Parish, Louisiana. She was also born in Arkansas. Several trees on Ancestry and Findagrave claim that she was the person who married P. Jackson Spears in 1931. However, I will trust Mildred & Norvelle over a census record on this one.

It does not appear that Ruby had children in either of her marriages.
