Thomas WARE was born in 1770 in Caswell County, North Carolina. He died on 19 Jan 1859 in Colorado, Colorado County, Texas. He is one of the foundational ancestors of the Sons and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Per the Colorado County Chronicles, Volume I & II: "Colorado County was originally part of Stephen F. Austin's first colony, and was known as the Municipality of Colorado under the rule of the Mexican government. In 1837 it was organized as one of the original counties of the Republic of Texas."

Though they are often overlooked, the cause files in the Office of the District Clerk are an enormously valuable resource for both historians and genealogists. The cause files come in two types: criminal and civil. The former contain papers relevant to the various criminal cases that were directed to the district court; the latter the papers of the lawsuits that were filed in the district court. This is a list of the criminal cause files from the beginning of the county, 1837, until 1930.

The list provides the cause file number, the style of the case, the year the indictment was handed down, and a brief description of the alleged crime, as it appears on the indictment. Many of the numbers were assigned to more than one case. No explanation for this has been encountered. Often numbers appear to have been skipped. These numbers were probably assigned to a case, but either no cause file was created for the case, or the cause file that was created has been lost or filed elsewhere. Information on the cause numbers missing from the list below might be gleaned from the various minute and docket books in the Office of the District Clerk. Remember that accusation is not the same thing as guilt. Those wishing to discover the outcome of any of the cases listed below should investigate further at the Office of the District Clerk at the Colorado County courthouse.

From the records, apparently Thomas Ware and his brother Nicholas were joined in the attempt on William R Turner's life by John Tanner. William Turner owned the local gambling house and had other charges against him including assault and murder. Interesting bunch. As we say in Texas, people need killin'. Just kidding. It's possible Ware met up with WR Turner first in Greene Co, Georgia before the Wares and Turners moved to Texas.

"...Most curiously, another of the largest slaveholders, Charles B. Stewart, owned 20 slaves but no land or other taxable property in the county. Another, Thomas Ware, had a plantation of 1107 acres in the north part of the county which he presumably had operated since he acquired it on May 19, 1840. In 1846, he had 17 slaves. To his north was a 600-acre plantation, which had been purchased by Briggs W. Hopson on March 8, 1840. In 1846, it was operated by Hopson's widow, Elizabeth Y. Hopson, and staffed by thirteen slaves. "Ware's and Hopson's plantations were nestled amidst the growing number of smaller farms that were owned and operated by Germans, and isolated from them not only linguistically, but because they were two of the very few in the area that used slave labor. Whether for philosopical or economic reasons, the Germans who were settling in the area in increasing numbers, by and large did not own slaves. In 1846, for example, of the seventy slaveholders in Colorado County, only one was German. That man, Charles Kessler, did not live among the other Germans, and owned only two slaves.

"....On May 9, 1846, a little more than a year after the Colorado County commissioners created the patrols, the state government passed a law which authorized the various counties to create them. The law specified that slaves could be given no more than 25 lashes, and allowed the patrols to arrest white people who were "found in any assemblage of slaves, or in or about any negro quarter" (see Gammel, comp., The Laws of Texas 1822-1897, vol. 2, pp. 1497-1501)....

"Since 1850, the number of slaves in the county had nearly tripled, and the ranks of suspicious slaveholders had swelled accordingly. John Matthews had greatly increased the number of slaves he owned, surpassing James S. Montgomery as the largest slaveholder in the county. In 1856, Matthews had 81 and Montgomery 78. Caleb Claiborne Herbert, with 29 slaves, Richard H. Foote, with 24, George Washington Thatcher, with 19, and Thomas Ware, with 17, had continued to operate their nearby plantations. ...

".... Texas Monument, November 6, 1850. The vote at Frelsburg, still called Cummins Creek by the newspaper, was 35 to 0 in favor of the bill. In Columbus, 24 persons voted for the bill and 45 against. The large slaveholders voted 9 to 0 against the bill at Thomas Ware's plantation.

"....Others of the old plantations had also changed hands. Thomas Ware had died on January 19, 1859, leaving his estate to be divided among fifteen heirs. After some quick legal maneuvering, on March 9, 1859 his administrators, Nicholas T. Ware and Frances Elbert Harwell, organized Ware's 24 slaves into fifteen lots and had each heir draw a number from a hat to determine which slave or slaves he or she got. Soon, the plantation itself was conveyed to Phineas M. Garrett, who, in 1860, operated it with the help of 35 slaves.

"...Other people raised horses, hogs, or chickens. Several, including Robert Robson and Leon de Serin, raised sheep. De Serin, who had an aristocratic family background in France, was probably the single greatest champion of sheep-raising in the county. He had arrived in Texas on February 20, 1842, only to discover that the law then in force made persons eligible for land grants only if they arrived prior to January 1, 1842. Nonetheless, the day after they arrived, he and some of his fellow passengers drafted a letter to Sam Houston asking that they be granted special dispensations. Houston refused. De Serin spent the next few years struggling to support himself and his wife and daughter, fending off illness, and contemplating returning to France. In 1846, he moved to Colorado County and began raising sheep.... He is not known to have lived in the county after 1852. What became of his sheep, each of which he had named and for which he kept meticulous birth and death records, is unknown. De Serin's eccentric sheep-raising, and others' eccentric cattle-raising, were sideshows to the county's economic base, farming. There were two distinct types of farmers in the county: those who used slaves and those who did not. Most of the German farmers in the north part of the county did not, and their failure to do so isolated them further from their English speaking neighbors. The largest slaveholder in the north part of the county, Thomas Ware, had in 1849 sold his plantation to William Frels and purchased another, smaller one, to the north of Claiborne Herbert's on the east side of the Colorado River....

By virtue of his purchase from Ware, Frels became by far the wealthiest and most productive of the German farmers."

Though Garrett did not finally complete purchase of Ware's plantation until February 21, 1863 (see Colorado County Deed Records, Book L, p. 353), it is clear from the tax rolls that he had acquired title to it earlier. Probably Garrett's purchase of the property was contingent upon him making a series of payments, which were only completed in 1863, at which time the deed was written. Rhodes came to the county in 1858, that year entering into a partnership with Angus McNeill and his family to cultivate McNeill's plantation (see Colorado County Bond and Mortgage Records, Book E, p. 171).

Thomas Ware was married four times. His first wife, Mary Sarah Jemison, our ancestor, bore him nine children, dying at the age of 41. His second wife was Phoebe Peeler, whom he married 2 Jun 1818. Together, they had an additional seven children. His third wife was Jerusa W Gordon Hope, a widow who he married 29 Feb 1844 in Colorado County, Texas. She bore him one child. His fourth marriage was to Nancy A McClosky, another widow, who he married 19 Feb 1848.

Thomas WARE and Mary Sarah JEMISON were married in 1793 in Greene County, Georgia.

... As to my relatives; my father had one brother old than himself, his name was John, my father's name was Thomas. They had one half-sister. John and Thomas were left orphans at the close of the Revolutionary Ware. My fatther was 16 years old at the time and was raised by his uncle, Robert Ware, who immigrated from Maryland (after the war) to Lincoln County, Georgia, where my father became a man.

He married my mother either in Lincoln County or Twiggs County, Georgia, I don't remember which. My uncle John immigrated to Kentucky at an early day, became a large property holder, and raised a large family of children. He visited us in Georgia, when I was about 8 years old. I remember his saying he could out-run, out-jump or throw down any man whose wife had thirteen children. I have met some of his grand-children. I have been informed that Mrs. Ex-President Lucy Hays, that noted temperance worker, was his grand-daughter - her mother was a Ware. I know but little of my father's relatives.

My mother was a Jemison, her name was Sarah, she died in Greene County, Georgia when I was 4 years old. I have a very indistinct recollection of her. She had two sisters. Elizabeth married William Kirkham. Artemisia married Moses Wheat, you know. They had five brothers, William, Samuel, Joseph, Robert, and Henry. Robert Jemison Jr of Birmingham, Alabama is a grandson of Uncle William. Elbert Jemison is a son of Uncle Robert. Owen, the young man you knew in New Orleans, was a grandson of Uncle Henry.

The old stock of Jemisons were men of intellect and enterprise. Aunt Artemisia (Jemison) Wheat was a woman of very superior ability.

Note: Henry Ware, the author of this letter, was the youngest child of Thomas Ware and Sarah Jemison.

In 1840, there is a Henry B Ware in Leon County, Florida. The household has just a husband and wife (both 30-40 yrs) and 31 slaves. Seems unlikely that this is our family.

However, we ought to be able to find him in 1840 and 1880 census.

Interestingly, even with this large of a land holding, I cannot find Henry in the 1850 slave schedule of the census. His neighbors are all listed but I don't see Henry.

NOTE: The following two letters were written by Sarah Bridges Wren when she was in her nineties. The first was written in 1903 to Georgia Vickers Wren the wife of Sarah's son Dr. Alonzo George Wren. The envelope is missing but she writes... To Georgia Wren. Dear Daughter I send you this little history of my life which I have hastely writen,it is short and meager but I don't suppose that anyone would be interested in much that I could tell although I have seen a good deal of this world. with love I remain your mother Sarah Wren. Page 1. I was born in Green County GA the 17th of April 1813. went into Morgan Co where we lived until I was 6 years old, when I was carried to Putnam Co where I grew to womanhood. Was converted and joined the Methodist church in July 1828 was married the 7th Sept the same year to G. W. Wren of South Carolina. We settled in GA where we remained until 1850 when we removed to Louisiana in Jan 1851 where Mr. Wren died in Augt 29th 1884 and where 5 of our 8 children have died. I was Gloriously sanctified at the Rock Springs camp meeting in Putnam Co, GA in 1849 which bless the good Lord I still claim and hold on to____has always been very merciful and good to me and has given special answers to prayer. My blessed Lord has watched over me now for 90 years & 6 months and nere denied me one blessing that was best for me to have..he has given me good friends everywhere I go, and never permitted any serious harm to befall me. I have been wanting to write to you for a long time but have put it off from time to time to feel well enough but I believe I get further from it instead of better and the truth is I am ashamed for anyone to see my writing because I can't read it myself after writing it. All the family think me better at least they talk that way, but I know my own feelings lest I and am not able to get around much have to be helped in and out at doors when I get out and when I..2..and when I ride which I seldom do I have tobe helped in and out of the carriage. all the family except Cecile Myers and myself are gone to plase on the river to give Mattie D. Orndorff and the children a outting while they are here. they have been here since the 9th of this month. Seth did not come with them but sent them with one of their neighbors who coming this way. you would be astonished to see how large Mattie D has grown and fine looking her children are. the oldest one is a little girl named Ruth Allis the boy's large named for this father....3...Seth Beauford Orndorff. In the Bicentennial Minutes, Mrs. Idalene Donegan reflects that early education probably began as early as 1842 with the arrival of Methodist Minister Reverend David Evans Thompson and his enterprising wife, Elizabeth Ann.

In 1845, Reverend Thompson had started a school and taught in Seguin's first schoolhouse on the northeastern corner of Nolte and Milam Streets. It was a three room adobe building which, by 1890, "succumbed to the elements." By 1849, Reverend Thompson, with the first trustees of the Methodist Church - Ezekiel Smith, Joshua Young, Wilson Randle, Thomas D. James, Thomas H. Duggan, James C. Watkins, and Charles A. Smith, built the first church at the northwestern corner of Austin and Market (Nolte) Streets. It was built with lumber shipped from Indianola, a three week trip. Today, one of the first church buildings in Seguin is located on the corner of south Camp and Washington Streets. It is a private residence.

Elizabeth Ann can only be described as a leader among women. She not only stood by her husband's side rather than behind him, she led the way during his absences. She was a member of the first graduation class of the Georgia Female College, later Wesleyan College, and the first woman teacher in Seguin. While her husband served in the Civil War, she literally ran the family plantation with the help of slaves. Cotton was planted and shipped to Mexico. She operated a cloth factory spinning cloth for the Confederacy as well.

This person is a mystery. He is rarely mentioned, but is found enough to have really existed. Betty Wren's theory is that he was handicapped or retarded. That's why he died relatively young and they used his name again. Even though A.D. Wren was living during the same time.

The record I find of this person, though, is the marker in the Wren cemetery, erected much later than this person's life. I suspect that there is a general confusion of this person and Alexander H.S. Wren or another child.

I really believe that A.D. Wren was named for William Alonzo Dossey, but never went by William and just dropped it. I do not believe that W.A.D. Wren is a different person than A.D. Wren.

Looks like Dr. Wren filed for a Confederate Pension in Arkansas in 1915 and Georgia Wren applied as a widow in 1916.

In this census, it appears that there is an Augustus Wren, age 16, as well as a William A.D. Wren. Looks like W.A.D. Wren is him, but not sure who Augustus is. Perhaps, the confusion on the A.D. Wren later is really around this "Augustus".

Dr. A.D. Wren applied for a pension on 19 Aug 1915 (along with John W. Hudson and John W. Gann). Veteran # 24686. Georgia Wren applied for a widow's pension on 18 Jan 1916. It seems unlikely that she received her pension, not being indigent.

Residence:
Deed from James J Vickers Jr notes that A D Wren was a resident of Bienville when he purchased the land. This must have been the precursor for his move into Arkansas and the genesis of his old homeplace.

Prescott, October 28 -
The barn of Dr. A.D. Wren, a prominent citizen of Albany Township living eight or ten miles south of Prescott, was burned yesterday together with all his corn (500 bushels) and between 4,000 and 5,000 bundles of fodder.

The fire is believed to have been incendiary in origin. The Doctor and all his family were in Prescott except his son Willard who went to the neighboring Postoffice after dinner leaving no one at home. There was no insurance.

Dr. Wren lives near the edge of the cyclone district that had all its crop prospect destroyed last spring and he was very active at that time in efforts to relieve the sufferers. He is a foremost citizen, a prominent Democrat, and wields an influence in his neighborhood.

Born: July 18, 1906
Hill farm in Nevada County, Arkansas (Prescott, County Seat).

Upon graduation entered Vocational Agricultural field working with High School boys. First job was the establishment of a new Vocational Agricultural Department at the Portland High School (Ashley County) Southeast Arkansas Delta area. [1930]

Three years later (1932) came to Wilson, Arkansas as Vocational Agricultural Instructor. Worked closely with the management of Lee Wilson & Company.

In the spring of 1933, the Roosevelt Administration came into into office and implemented a program to plow up each third row of cotton because of oversupply and low prices. While still in Vocational Agriculture was pressed into temporary duty as inspector for Federal plow-up program. Traveled Northeast Arkansas where got to view much fine farm land and meet many wonderful people. This program known as Agricultural Adjustment Act was the forerunner of ASCS.

In 1934 succeeded Stanley D. Carpenter as County Agent of South Mississippi County. At that time the Federal Agricultural Adjustment Program was administered by the County Agricultural Extensions Service.

Shall never forget some of the headaches incident to this early program, especially in 1934 when there was a difficulty in securing the "Bankhead Certificates", a type of permit necessary for a farmer to have before he could either gin or sell his cotton. The crop was early (August) and the certificates were late (September). Farmers were broke and disgruntled because of the unnecessary delays cause by Government red tape. Such was indeed a critical time for the farmer. All were greatly in dept, the creditors were pushing them for payment, there was a good cotton crop in the field opening fast, but the Government procedure was obstructing the normal operation procedure.

With the help of an excellent County Committee: J.F. Thompkins: Burdette; Rufus Branch, Pecan Point; and Clay Ayers, Osceola; South Mississippi County did manage to be the second county in the State to receive their allotment of "Bankhead Certificates" and were able to gin the cotton slightly late, but much ahead of any other group of farmers except Pulaski County.

A little nostalgia:
At the time of the plow-up campaign of 1933 the idea was so novel that farmers could not imagine such action. Cotton was celling for 4c-5c per pound. "The bank holiday" of March 1933 was fresh on the minds of everyone. Banks were going broke, Insurance Companies were being forced to foreclose on mortgages, entrepreneurs were jumping from tweleve story buildings, as this county was in the depths of the greatest depression it had known.

Henry A. Wallace was Secretary of Agriculture and reluctantly he decided to take some remedial action after the Plow-Up was announced and it became evident that it was going to be generally accepted the price of cotton increased from 4c-5c per pound to 5c-6c per pound. Not much in dollars but that one cent represented a 20% advance. By 1934, the time of the "Bankhead Certificates", the price of cotton had increased to a whopping 7c per pund - $35.00 per bale.

In 1935 the USDA began a rather comprehensive action program in this County. USDA leased 12,000 acres of farm land and moved "Rural Rehabilitation clients" onto this tract in an effort to help see them through the depression. At about the same time the Federal Government bought 16,000 acres of cutover timber land and started a project of development. This was the beginning of Dyess, Arkansas having taken its name from W.R. Dyess of Luxora, Arkansas who was the guiding spirit behind this undertaking.

[Little Rock] In the fall of 1935 I joined USDA as State Farm Management Specialist. Later became the Regional Farm Management Specialist. In 1938 I became Arkansas State Director of Farm Security Administration within USDA. During the ten years I was with USDA I held the positions of Assistant Regional Director FSA, at Raleigh, N.C., and later Regional (seven southeastern states) Director of War Food Administration at Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1945 I returned to Mississippi County as a practical farm operator. My position was Unit Manager of 12,000 acres of land in the vicinity of Marie, Arkansas. This involved taking over a tract of land which had been leased out and allowed to grow up by the former operator. All equipment had to be purchased at a time of strictest rationing and controls. This involved bartering, trading, and even dismantling a railroad, trading the steel to a farm implement company for farm tractors with which to farm the land.

In 1951 I became Vice President of Lee Wilson & Company, a diversified agricultural-industry operation in South Mississippi County, with operations in Crittenden County, Arkansas and Elko County, Nevada. There are sixteen departments or divisions within Lee Wilson & Company, representing a wider diversity of interests.

Civic affairs:

1. One of the original incorporators of Mississippi County Soil Conservation District and a member of the governinging board since its foundation. Served as President of the Board two terms, a total of eleven years.
2. Past Chairman of Rural Development Authority that authorized original survey of Mississippi County, its needs, and helped formulate plans that have served as a basis for water-sewer development in rural areas.
3. Past member of State Board of Economic Education, State Department of Education
4. Past President (1972-1973) of Arkansas Soybean Association. Now serving as Chairman of Research and Extension Committee of Arkansas Soybean Association.
5. Member of Board of Directors of Bank of Wilson
6. Member of Board of Directors of Mississippi County E.O.C. Inc.

In 1926, Hudson enrolled as a freshman at Arkansas. He was in charge of publicity for Agri Days. He was on the Razorbacks football team, a member of Tri Eta dormitory fraternity

One of his assistants will be Joe Dillahunty of this city, former county assessor, who will have headquarters on the Ridgeland farm, part of the rehabilitation project.

Mr. Wren, a native of Prescott, Ark., was Smith-Hughes instructor at Wilson high school until last fall, when he was named county agent at Osceola to succeed S.D. Carpenter. He has also had experience in agricultural work in southeast Arkansas.

While Mr. Wren's permanent headquarters will be at Dyess colony, his major task this year will be at the county rehabilitation farm, where the ERA plans to locate several hundred farm families, no one relief rolls in this and other counties. The farm has 6,000 acres now in cultivation and plans call for the clearing of an additional 2,500 agres. The land has been leased from the Lee Wilson company."

During the Depression, times were bad and he obtained money to open a business in California. He set up a bookstore in Glendale, CA. He allowed some Patterson cousins to run it while he was preparing his family for a move. They needed income so he allowed them to assume ownership of that business and opened another bootstore, The Booknook, in Pasadena, CA, which he ran until the late 1980s.
