It appears that A.B. Shehee was born in Maryland, but his family moved to middle Georgia before he married (maybe). I had thought that his parents stayed behind and that he moved after he married, but newspaper notices place him and his parents in Washington County by 1817.

I think he was elected to the state General Assembly but only served a couple of years. By 1830, he had moved to south Georgia near Valdosta in Lowndes county. And then shortly moved into north Florida, Jefferson County, near Aucilla.

I have seen an account that he died in Decatur county, GA (Bainbridge). I have not proved that, but he may have owned land there.

On the road to Ashville, fifteen miles from Monticello, lies one of the beauty spots of Jefferson County. The name, Glendower, was given to this plantation by John Finlayson, whose father was Daniel Finlayson from Scotland, who, when a boy of eighteen years, came to America in 1800. Daniel settled in South Carolina and married Christiana McRae, also a native of Scotland, whose family had emigrated to America. In 1810, his oldest son, John, was born. In 1818, the family moved to Telfair County, Georgia, near Cape Fear River, and Daniel turned his attention to farming, especially stock-raising, and was noted for his neatness in the management of his farm. He died very soon after settling in Georgia. His wife was a religious woman, of great physical energy and intellectual vigor. She was very ambitious to have her three children educated. They attended school in a primitive log structure, and, though the instruction gained there may have contributed to their knowledge, it could not compare to the intellectual acquirements gained at their own fireside. In the planting season, John helped with the labors of the farm, and during the rest of the year, he attended school. He was as full of ambitious plans, as his mother, and at fifteen years of age, he took charge of a small school, which he taught long enough to discover his inaptitude for teaching. His next venture was in the mercantile business. By 1829 he had a business of his own, and in ten years he was worth thirty five thousand dollars. He had always cherished a desire to be a planter, and in 1839 he possessed the requisite amount to purchase a plantation, and chose Florida as his future home.

He bought a fine tract of land, a sufficient number of slaves and implements to do the laborious work, thus beginning to realize the fulfillment of his hopes. In 1842, he married Florida Augusta Shehee, a daughter of a very early settler of Jefferson County, Judge A. B. Shehee. A most attractive home was built, beautified by the wonderful setting of moss-draped live oaks, and other native trees. The interior sheltered graceful pieces of antique furniture and exquisite oil portraits of his five children; John Jr., Augusta, Mary, Virginia and Daniel Aylesbury.

US and International Marriage Records says Alyesberry was born in 1795 in Georgia.

Certainly, the family came to Georgia from Maryland, but where was he born? I need to prove them in Maryland and track the migration to Georgia.

Another Suit Under the Civil Rights Bill -
William H. Honens, of the parish of Bienville, has instituted suit in the United States District Court, Judge Durell, against H. and F. Took, H. Vickers, H. Shehee, C.G. Butler, Charles Herron, and George Hays, of said parish, claiming $55,000 damages or an alleged attempt to kill him on the 28th of May, 1868. The petitioner alleges that the party entered his house and fired upon him, firing into his person fourteen bullets, and that they fired upon him after he was down and senseless, and rendering him a cripple for life. He also alleges tha they destroyed his entire crop, consisting of thirty acres of cotton and sixty of corn. The action is brought in the United States Court, as petitioner alleges that he is unable, in consequence of the prejudice against him, on account of political opinions, to enforce the laws against the said parties in the parish of Bienville,
The grand jury of the United States Court, it will be remembered, a few days ago found a true bill against the said parties above-named.

The Webster Tribune gives the following account of a tragedy that occurred in Ringgold on the 13th instant:
The town of Ringgold, in Bienville parish, was the scene of a terrible tragedy last Sunday evening. As Thos. Shehee, a young man well known in Minden, was coming down the street, Mr. Locket stepped out of a store-door, drew a pistol from his pocket and said, "Tom, you have ruined my sister and I am going to kill you." He instantly opened fire on shehee, who as quickly as possible, drew a revolver from his pocket and returned the fire. Locket shot Shehee through his right breast, his left and right arms, breaking the latter. As soon as Shehee saw that is arm was broken, he tried to run, when Locket shot him in the back, the ball coming out at his left breast, just above the heart. Shehee then fell, and Locket turning, made his escape.
These young men are members of families of high standing. Their fathers are the leading merchants of Ringgold.
It seems that Mr. Thomas Shehee had been engaged to Miss Locket for two or three years. The impression of the whole community was that they were to marry. Some time since Shehee stopped his attentions, and soon afterwards married a Miss Baker, near Mt. Lebanon.

Hudson Wren

Born: July 18, 1906
Hill farm in Nevada County, Arkansas (Prescott, County Seat).

Football - University of Arkansas Razorbacks 1927 & 1928

Upon graduation entered Vocational Agricultural field working with High School boys. First job was the establishment of a new Vocational Agricultural Department at the Portland High School (Ashley County) Southeast Arkansas Delta area. [1930]

Three years later (1932) came to Wilson, Arkansas as Vocational Agricultural Instructor. Worked closely with the management of Lee Wilson & Company.

In the spring of 1933, the Roosevelt Administration came into into office and implemented a program to plow up each third row of cotton because of oversupply and low prices. While still in Vocational Agriculture was pressed into temporary duty as inspector for Federal plow-up program. Traveled Northeast Arkansas where got to view much fine farm land and meet many wonderful people. This program known as Agricultural Adjustment Act was the forerunner of ASCS.

In 1934 succeeded Stanley D. Carpenter as County Agent of South Mississippi County. At that time the Federal Agricultural Adjustment Program was administered by the County Agricultural Extensions Service.

Shall never forget some of the headaches incident to this early program, especially in 1934 when there was a difficulty in securing the "Bankhead Certificates", a type of permit necessary for a farmer to have before he could either gin or sell his cotton. The crop was early (August) and the certificates were late (September). Farmers were broke and disgruntled because of the unnecessary delays cause by Government red tape. Such was indeed a critical time for the farmer. All were greatly in dept, the creditors were pushing them for payment, there was a good cotton crop in the field opening fast, but the Government procedure was obstructing the normal operation procedure.

With the help of an excellent County Committee: J.F. Thompkins: Burdette; Rufus Branch, Pecan Point; and Clay Ayers, Osceola; South Mississippi County did manage to be the second county in the State to receive their allotment of "Bankhead Certificates" and were able to gin the cotton slightly late, but much ahead of any other group of farmers except Pulaski County.

A little nostalgia:
At the time of the plow-up campaign of 1933 the idea was so novel that farmers could not imagine such action. Cotton was celling for 4c-5c per pound. "The bank holiday" of March 1933 was fresh on the minds of everyone. Banks were going broke, Insurance Companies were being forced to foreclose on mortgages, entrepreneurs were jumping from tweleve story buildings, as this county was in the depths of the greatest depression it had known.

Henry A. Wallace was Secretary of Agriculture and reluctantly he decided to take some remedial action after the Plow-Up was announced and it became evident that it was going to be generally accepted the price of cotton increased from 4c-5c per pound to 5c-6c per pound. Not much in dollars but that one cent represented a 20% advance. By 1934, the time of the "Bankhead Certificates", the price of cotton had increased to a whopping 7c per pund - $35.00 per bale.

In 1935 the USDA began a rather comprehensive action program in this County. USDA leased 12,000 acres of farm land and moved "Rural Rehabilitation clients" onto this tract in an effort to help see them through the depression. At about the same time the Federal Government bought 16,000 acres of cutover timber land and started a project of development. This was the beginning of Dyess, Arkansas having taken its name from W.R. Dyess of Luxora, Arkansas who was the guiding spirit behind this undertaking.

[Little Rock] In the fall of 1935 I joined USDA as State Farm Management Specialist. Later became the Regional Farm Management Specialist. In 1938 I became Arkansas State Director of Farm Security Administration within USDA. During the ten years I was with USDA I held the positions of Assistant Regional Director FSA, at Raleigh, N.C., and later Regional (seven southeastern states) Director of War Food Administration at Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1945 I returned to Mississippi County as a practical farm operator. My position was Unit Manager of 12,000 acres of land in the vicinity of Marie, Arkansas. This involved taking over a tract of land which had been leased out and allowed to grow up by the former operator. All equipment had to be purchased at a time of strictest rationing and controls. This involved bartering, trading, and even dismantling a railroad, trading the steel to a farm implement company for farm tractors with which to farm the land.

In 1951 I became Vice President of Lee Wilson & Company, a diversified agricultural-industry operation in South Mississippi County, with operations in Crittenden County, Arkansas and Elko County, Nevada. There are sixteen departments or divisions within Lee Wilson & Company, representing a wider diversity of interests.

Civic affairs:

1. One of the original incorporators of Mississippi County Soil Conservation District and a member of the governinging board since its foundation. Served as President of the Board two terms, a total of eleven years.
2. Past Chairman of Rural Development Authority that authorized original survey of Mississippi County, its needs, and helped formulate plans that have served as a basis for water-sewer development in rural areas.
3. Past member of State Board of Economic Education, State Department of Education
4. Past President (1972-1973) of Arkansas Soybean Association. Now serving as Chairman of Research and Extension Committee of Arkansas Soybean Association.
5. Member of Board of Directors of Bank of Wilson
6. Member of Board of Directors of Mississippi County E.O.C. Inc.
7. Church affiliation: Methodist. Member of the Official Board of the Wilson United Methodist Church. Two terms as Chairman of the Board.

In 1926, Hudson enrolled as a freshman at Arkansas. He was in charge of publicity for Agri Days. He was on the Razorbacks football team, a member of Tri Eta dormitory fraternity

Hudson remained active with Agri Days in his sophomore year. He pledged and joined Kappa Sigma fraternity as well as continuing in Tri Eta. He was a member of the Press Club. And he continued to play football.

In his Junior year, Hudson was again in charge of publicity for Agri Days, was a part of the Arkansas Boosters Club, played football, was in the Press Club, was still in Tri Eta and Kappa Sigma and the Varsity Club.

Mr. Wren has accepted, Mr. Wilson said, subject to approval of the state agricultural extension service, from which he must obtain a leave of absence. In this new capacity he will be the manager of the 8,500 Mississippi county rural rehabilitation project, near Marie, and will also be agricultural advisor for the Dyess colony. One of his assistants will be Joe Dillahunty of this city, former county assessor, who will have headquarters on the Ridgeland farm, part of the rehabilitation project.

Mr. Wren, a native of Prescott, Ark., was Smith-Hughes instructor at Wilson high school until last fall, when he was named county agent at Osceola to succeed S.D. Carpenter. He has also had experience in agricultural work in southeast Arkansas.

While Mr. Wren's permanent headquarters will be at Dyess colony, his major task this year will be at the county rehabilitation farm, where the ERA plans to locate several hundred farm families, no one relief rolls in this and other counties. The farm has 6,000 acres now in cultivation and plans call for the clearing of an additional 2,500 agres. The land has been leased from the Lee Wilson company."

She is survived by her daughter, Shawn Shaffer and her husband Steve of Warrenton, VA, two sisters, Linda Stockton of Prescott, AR and Wanda Kershaw of Alhambra, CA and grandchildren, Steven and Lauren Shaffer of Warrenton, VA.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 3pm until the time of service at 4pm at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton, VA. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery on December 14, 2009 at 2pm.

John Woodul Gann, Sr., passed away Sunday, March 28, 2021, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He formerly resided in England, Arkansas and was 95 years old. Born October 12, 1925, in Prescott, Arkansas, he was the son of late James Cleveland Gann and Julia Woodul Gann. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Eleanor Morris Gann.

Mr. Gann graduated from Catholic High in 1943; and following active military service in World War II, he graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1949. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Blue Key.

Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Gann enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943 and served in the Eighth Air Force during World War II as a nose gunner/toggler on a B-17 aircraft of the 490th Bomb Group. He was stationed in eastern Great Britain and flew 29 combat missions followed by four mercy missions. He was awarded several commendations for his service including the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the European Theater Ribbon, three Battle Stars, and the Purple Heart.

After graduating from the University of Arkansas, Mr. Gann returned to Prescott and engaged in farming. He also continued his military service and was commissioned as a Captain and served as Company Commander of Company C of the 153rd Infantry Regiment of the Arkansas National Guard until 1958.

He married Eleanor Morris on December 27, 1953 and they moved to England, Arkansas in 1955, where he ran a successful insurance business and pursued his farming interests. He served as a President of the England School Board, Plum Bayou Levee District Board, England Little League Program and the England Hospital Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Citizen's Bank and Citizen's Realty Corporation. For a number of years, he managed the Federal Gin Company. Mr. Gann was an active member of the timber community and was awarded the Arkansas Tree Farmer of the Year in 1986. Mr. Gann was a member and served on the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church in England, Arkansas and most recently attended the First United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas.

He is survived by three sons: James (Jim) Benton Gann of McNeil, Arkansas (Kathy); John (Jay) Woodul Gann, Jr. of Houston, Texas (Mary Howell); and George Houston Gann of Little Rock, Arkansas (Nancy); and six grandchildren including Jim's children, Benton James Gann and Carrie Lynn Gann: Jay's children, John Woodul Gann III, and Mary Howell Gann: and George's children, John Carmichael Gann and Lauren Elizabeth Gann.

A graveside service will be held for family at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 5, 2021, at Tomberlin Cemetery in Coy, Arkansas with Reverend Grace Ellen Rice officiating.

Mark Armstrong, 78 of Laneburg, Arkansas passed from his earthly Life April 24, 2022. Mark was born on February 20, 1944, in Prescott, Arkansas to M.D. and Mary Wren Armstrong. He was a farmer his entire life to which he dearly loved. His other passion was heavy equipment and pushing dirt. His greatest love on this earth this earth was his family. Mark was known for his quick wit, a red GMC, John Deere tractors and telling a good joke. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Robin Wren Bowden, 59, died on June 25, 2017. She was born on March 31, 1958, in Cheverly, Maryland, the second daughter of Alonzo and Betty Wren.
Along with her siblings, Lisa, Scott, and Kelly, Robin grew up in Ft. Washington, Maryland. She loved swimming from an early age and was known to be vivacious and social.
Robin loved two things more than anything else in this world: her family and the beach. The beach was her "happy place."
After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2015, those two things became even more important to her. Robin promised to fighta�" for herself and for her family. She spent an unforgettable summer at the beach surrounded by family and friends. She checked items off of her bucket lista�" she paddleboarded, went up in a hot air balloon in California, and watched her favorite football team, the Kansas City Chiefs, from the sidelines of Arrowhead Stadium. She always put others before herself and that continued even in her last days. She fought hard until the very end.
Robin was predeceased by her father, Alonzo. She is survived by mother Betty; siblings, Lisa (August), Scott (Cindy),and Kelly; daughter Kerry; and granddoggie, Minnie. She also leaves behind a nephew, nieces, great-nieces, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday July 11 at 11 am at St. John’s Episcopal Church Broadcreek, 9801 Livingston Rd, Ft. Washington MD 20744.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or Gilchrist Hospice Care.
