Bienville, Bienville, Louisiana, United States [2, 4, 5, 6, 7] |
- Death is recorded in some places as 21 Feb 1881, but newspaper accounts give it as 19 Feb 1881 (the Saturday following the shooting).
The Webster Tribune gives the following account of a tragedy that occurred in Ringgold on the 13th instant:
The town of Ringgold, in Bienville parish, was the scene of a terrible tragedy last Sunday evening. As Thos. Shehee, a young man well known in Minden, was coming down the street, Mr. Locket stepped out of a store-door, drew a pistol from his pocket and said, "Tom, you have ruined my sister and I am going to kill you." He instantly opened fire on shehee, who as quickly as possible, drew a revolver from his pocket and returned the fire. Locket shot Shehee through his right breast, his left and right arms, breaking the latter. As soon as Shehee saw that is arm was broken, he tried to run, when Locket shot him in the back, the ball coming out at his left breast, just above the heart. Shehee then fell, and Locket turning, made his escape.
These young men are members of families of high standing. Their fathers are the leading merchants of Ringgold.
It seems that Mr. Thomas Shehee had been engaged to Miss Locket for two or three years. The impression of the whole community was that they were to marry. Some time since Shehee stopped his attentions, and soon afterwards married a Miss Baker, near Mt. Lebanon.
- Shreveport Daily Times, 22 Feb 1881
The Louisiana Democrat of Alexandria adds
Mr. Shehee is well known in Alexandria, having been employed as a telegraph operator at this point a few years back.
- The Louisiana Democrat, Alexandria, Louisiana, 9 Mar 1881
The Shreveport Daily Times continues:
A few months ago Keet Lockett of Ringgold, Bienville parish, killed Thos. Shehee, of that place. It was alleged that the latter seduced Lockett's sister. last week the grand jury of that parish failed to indict Lockett.
- Shreveport Daily Times, 19 May 1881
THe Donaldson Chief reported:
Mr. Thomas Shehee, who was shot by Mr. Keet Lockett at RInggold, died the following Saturday from the effects of his wounds.
-- The Donaldson Chief, 19 Mar 1881
That would place his death on 19 February 1881 instead of 21 Feb 1881
