    • Andrew Jackson Welch was born June 5, 1825, in Georgia to John and Anna Melear Welch. A.J. came to Texas from Coweta County, Ga., in about 1851 or '52. He married Nancy Ann Buckner on September 30, 1856, in Rusk County. They had 11 children: Sarah Ann, Martha Jane, Eli Franklin, Mary Elizabeth, Ellen Telula, Nancy Amanda, Prescilla Aquila, Anna Julia, Georgia Eliza, Myrtis Pamela, and Melinda Texana.

      A.J. joined the Confederate Army in January 1863. He served as a private in Co. C 32nd Texas Cavalry, also known as Crump's Battalion Mounted Volunteers. After the war, A.J. returned to Rusk County, where he was very active in his community. A.J. and Nancy were members of the Zion Hill Baptist Church.

      A.J. died on Nov. 22, 1899, and was laid to rest in the Welch Cemetery on land that he had set aside for a family cemetery.

    • It appears that Jack moved from Georgia to Texas around 1850. I have not found him in the 1850 census, where he would be a single man, not having married until 1856.
