- That's a great historical geography question—Balmuick and the parish of Monzievaird and Strowan both have deep roots in Perthshire, Scotland, though the names can be elusive today due to changes in local governance, mapping, and even spelling conventions over time. What is Balmuick?
Balmuick (sometimes spelled Balmuick, Balmuickie, or Balmuchil in older documents) is indeed a real location, though small and often not prominent on modern maps. It was not a village, but rather a farm or small estate—one of many such named places in rural Scottish parishes.
Balmuick is located near the village of Comrie, just west of Monzievaird Kirk. You can still find it on detailed Ordnance Survey maps or historical gazetteers. It's nestled in Strathearn, a valley of the River Earn in Perthshire.About the Parish – Monzievaird and Strowan
This was a combined ecclesiastical and civil parish in Perthshire. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many rural parishes included scattered farms, crofts, and hamlets, rather than large villages or towns. Monzievaird Kirk is still standing and visible on modern maps near Loch Turret and Ochtertyre. How to Locate Balmuick Today
On modern maps:
•
Use the National Library of Scotland's map viewer (https://maps.nls.uk) to see 18th–19th century maps.
•
Search for “Balmuick” near Comrie, Perth and Kinross. It appears just northwest of Ochtertyre and east of Comrie on some 19th-century maps.
Google Maps may not recognize the name directly, but if you zoom into the Comrie area and overlay historical maps, you will find it.Summary
