William entered service as a Private in the 50th Alabama Infantry on April 1, 1862.
At some point in the war he was wounded and also captured as a POW.
He is listed as one of several POW released from Union Prison at Nashville on Jan 6, 1865.

When wife Cathrine filed for a Pension in 1893, she stated that he died from complication of his war wound and disease and that he only lived about 6 years after the war. The family was living on the Ledbetter farm at Wannville in the 1870 census. His death date of 1872 is based on the application by Cathrine, and it is believed he is one of the first graves at Price that is marked only with a field stone. Possible near other of the Wann family that are buried here at Price, another source suggest he died in Magazine, Arkansas in 1872Gravesite Details
