Wilson Carter served as a Private in Co I, 42 Regt, Georgia Infantry, enlisting 4 March 1862. He was taken prisoner sometime prior to 4 July 1863, when he was paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Based on pay records, it appears likely he was captured sometime around 8 Oct 1862. At his parole, he swore an oath not to take up arms against the United States again. Apparently, this was merely a formality because Wilson went back to his unit. He was captured again 23 September 1864 in Atlanta, Georgia. From Atlanta, he was shipped to Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois. He is listed on a roll of prisoners who died between 15 March and 31 March 1865. He died 26 March 1865 of rheumatism of the heart and is buried in grave 987, block 3, Chicago City Cemetery.
