2760 In the 1920 census, George's father is reported as being from France with French as his first language and his mother is from Illinois. This is clearly bogus. He is working as a shoe repairman. I wonder if he works with Granddad's father. He is listed as 64 years old. Williams, George Collier (I6511)

2761 In the 1920 census, he may be enumerated as J. Wills Higgs in the household of Viola Stepp, Idabel, McCurtain Co., Oklahoma.

From Mary Higgs Thompson
Hi Scott! Good to hear from you. Oddly enough, I have some old letters from Lida Higgs (Granny) to "My dear Ida" that I have been intending to transcribe in my retirement, but of course my retirement has been so busy I haven't had time to even read them all closely. But there is one from May 4, 1932 saying that Jere Will's marriage to Miss Langley had been a "ghastly mistake." He had all along intended for his mother to stay with him and take care of "the baby" Jere and this caused no small amount of havoc in the household -- so they got divorced.

AND. there was another marriage, to Mrs. Vesta Littlefield. They got married after meeting at Sulphur Springs (Texas?). Her husband was killed about 2 years before and she had three children ranging in age from 8 to 5. This letter was dated Feb. 5, 1936. She was apparently quite sickly with kidney and "female" troubles, but I don't have anything about what happened to her.

And yes, Florence had been married to Mr. Hill. He was the father of Florence's two girls, Daisy and Judy. Judy is still alive, but Daisy died a while back. I don't know anything about him except my cousin Cindy Clendenen, Daisy's daughter, says he was not a nice man, so maybe he and Florence got divorced. I also always wondered if he was a Hill that was connected with Gifford Hill, the company that Jere Will worked for?

Anyway, Granny did love to write long interesting letters! I am still planning to transcribe them, turn them into a screen play !?

Higgs, Jere Will (I3531)

2762 In the 1920 census, he was listed as 39 years old, which would give a birth year of 1881. Shipplett, George Washington (I5621)

2774 In the 1930 Census, the enumerator moves down Washington St. in ED 11-139 and skips right past 246 Washington St. Perhaps Michael and Nellie were temporarily living elsewhere, or the just not at home. Boyle, Michael F. (I1108)

2783 In the 1953 Weymouth city directory, it lists Nellie as Michael Boyle's wife, even though she had already died. Callahan, Ellen Theresa (I1334)

2784 In the census, Artie is listed as R.D. This led to some confusion on my part for some time (until I re-read my notes and figured out what had to be the case). Rhonda Dickson, wife of David Noyle Dickson, son of Artie Dickson has provided information on this line. Dickson, Artie (I2555)

2785 In the column noting age at first marriage, both Irl and Bessie say 28. That might be right for him, but she has children who are 18 years old. I presume that they answered with their age at this marriage. Higgs, Irl Nash (I3528)

2786 In the deed from William Coats, Robert Ware was listed as being in Lincoln County, which was created from the eastern part of Wilkes Co in 1796 Ware, Robert (I9131)

2787 In the deed to John McWilliams, Ester is repeatedly referred to as John's wife. Family: John Faver / Esther Lewis (F726)

2788 In the famiy of George W Shifflett & Minnie Z Shifflett, a Martha S Anner is listedas George's mother-in-law. Since he has been married only once, this must be Minnie's mother. So this is our Martha / Susan. She is listed as 64 years old and widowed, born in Alabama. Taylor, Martha A. (I5886)

2789 In the household in 1870, there are Lemuel, Chister, and John, ages 9,6,1, that appear to be grandchildren, but it is not clear to whom they belong.

In 1870, Charles is listed with real property valued at $1000. So, finally he is a land owner.
Garner, Charles (I3099)

2790 In the index to US Naturalization Records, Phillip Doucette was admitted June 11, 1917. His residence was 41 Cotton Ave, E. Braintree, Mass., He reported that he was born on December 24, 1977 in Cheticamp, Cape Breton and that he was a riveter. His wife was Catherine. Naturalization Certificate Number from the index is 845663. This should be investigated.

The 1920 Census says that this was completed in 1919 rather than 1917, though he was accepted in 1917.
Doucette, Phillippe Remerl (I2654)

2791 In the Knox County tax lists, Jesse pays no poll. This usually means that he is too old to have to pay a poll. Often 60 years old. Need to validate current tax law for Tennessee at that point.

In the Land Entry Book for Wilkes County, NC, 1778-1781, there are two grants listed that mention Jesse Council.
No. 539.  8 Dec 1779.  James Forbus. e. 300 Ac N side Yadkin River adjoining Frd Hogs improvement.  (James Forbus marked out; Jesse Council written in)
No. 699. 2 Jan 1779.  William Lenoir e. 320 ac n waters New River near Lewis' old cabbin, including improvement whereon Baker King formerly lived. (Wm Lenoir marked out; Jesse Council written in)
Where one name is crossed out and another written in, it means that the land entry was transferred before the grant was actually made. None of these mean that Jesse was necessarily in Wilkes in 1779.

It appears that Jesse Council was in Surry County, NC by Sept 1776 when he witnessed the will of Michael Baker. He married Elizabeth and had several children. Jordan looks like the oldest son, followed by Hodges. I still believe that Isaac was one of his children, probably the youngest son. I think perhaps Matthew is the son immediately before Isaac. There are daughters, at least Charlotte, and others not yet named.

It looks like he moved to Tennessee immediately before statehood. in late 1795. Hodges came in 1801. Jordan stayed in North Carolina.

Jesse wrote a will in 1828 and died in 1830.
Council, Jesse (I9639)

2792 In the marriage index, William is listed as William T. Land rather than Law. But all other documents call him Law. Family: William T. Law / Sarah Jane Bailey (F3148)

2793 In the marriage record, Mary's mother is recorded as Mary Lynes rather than Bridget. Family: Patrick Joseph Crehan / Mary Eliza Callahan (F3313)

2794 In the Massachusetts, Compiled Marriages, Priscilla is listed as Mrs. Priscilla Beals. This seems to imply to me that she may have been married previously. One record records a child of Knight Brown and Lydia Beals. Perhaps she was his first wife. Family: Knight Brown / Priscilla Beals (F3339)

2795 In the Oklahoma death index, there is a Martha A. Jones listed as having died on 11 Sep 1931. However, the death certificates are not open records in Oklahoma and require considerable proof to obtain. Therefore, this may not be a great record to pursue to get more data on Martha. Taylor, Martha A. (I5886)

2796 In the personal property lists, starting in 1793, I see John Baker and George Baker with son William in the neighborhood and not yet attached to a family here. Baker, William (I729)

2797 In the probate for David Murray Sr, Henry Ware Sr & Jr are listed as the executors for John Garrott, dec'd. This is listed on a Note of David Murray & Hugh Middleton of Ga and S.C. to Henry Ware Sr. and Jr., execrs of John Garrott, dec'd signed Jan 17, 1785, for L8. Paid his proportionate part by Wm Murray, admr 1798.

I suspect that John Garrott is the father of Martha Garrett Ware.
There is a later marriage record for John Garrott to Patsy Kendrick, 10 Feb 1811, p. 601 of the marriage records.
Ware, Henry (I6340)

2798 In this census, it appears that there is an Augustus Wren, age 16, as well as a William A.D. Wren. Looks like W.A.D. Wren is him, but not sure who Augustus is. Perhaps, the confusion on the A.D. Wren later is really around this "Augustus". Wren, Alonzo Dossey (I6659)

2799 In this deed of trust, Peter Bailey essentially devises all of his property, just two weeks previously set up as collateral for a bond, to his heirs, with his sons Peter A and William H Bailey as the trustees.

In this, he distributes land, personal property, stock, and slaves to his children, giving his wife Sarah a lifetime use of all of it.
Bailey, Peter Cock (I660)

2800 In this deed, John B. Hill sells for $100 to Wm Townes his interest in his mothers dower right, namely a group of slaves listed in the deed.

In this deed, it says that his mother, Elizabeth Clark, formerly Elizabeth Hill, was given a life interest in these slaves by her husband John Hill. This means that at the time of this deed, John Hill is dead and Elizabeth Hill Clark is still living.
Hill, John B. (I6895)
