Notes:

Joseph, the fifth son of John Dickson (1704-1774), was Register of Deeds and County Surveyor of Duplin County; and represented Duplin County in the North Carolina House of Commons in 1780 and 1797. During the American Revolution, Joseph served in the Wilmington District Militia. After the Revolution, Joseph migrated west over the mountains into what later became the state of Tennessee. However, becoming dissatisfied with the mountainous terrain, he returned to North Carolina. In 1800, he again moved to Tennessee with his eight grown sons and their families, in quest of large landed estates. Other members of the family followed."

Descendants of Simon Dickson shows many land transactions for Joseph and a will that details the disposition of all of his slaves.

Robert McNairy was the son of Francis McNairy and Mary Boyd. He married Anne Hamilton, daughter of Gen. John Hamilton and Elizabeth Archer, on 23 Jul 1790 (documented by the "Shorter Family Bible). They lived in Giles Co, TN for many years and are buried in the McNairy Cemetery on their home place. The cemetery is a cow lot now, and the graves and tombstones are TOTALLY destroyed. (There ought to be a law!!!!) Thank heaven, years ago there was an old cemetery survey taken that recorded, at least, the graves that had not yet been destroyed.

Additional children for whom I have been unable to find places of burial:
1. Mary McNairy (1791-1816)- married Joseph Dickson, Jr.
2. Sarah "Sally" McNairy (1796-1850)- married Hubbard S. Harwell
3. Caroline Bell McNairy (1813-1849)- married Alfred Wilson
4. Mary Ann McNairy (1816-1870)- married Henry Ambrose Shorter

Were some of these additional children buried in the Robert McNairy Cemetery and their graves were lost before the cemetery survey was finally taken?

Anne Hamilton McNairy was the daughter of Gen. John Hamilton and Elizabeth Archer. She married Robert McNairy 23 Jul 1790 in Guilford Co, NC. They later moved to Giles Co, TN and lived there the remainder of their lives. Both she and Robert McNairy died in Davidson Co, TN visiting family but are buried on their old home place in Giles Co, TN. The cemetery is TOTALLY destroyed as a fenced in cow lot now. Thank heaven there was a cemetery survey made years ago before ALL of the graves were lost. We will never know about the graves that were lost before the cemetery survey was FINALLY taken.

"Colonel John Dickson, born in Ireland, came to America about the year 1736 and located in Chester Co., Pennsylvania, where he lived for a few years. He then lived for a short time in Maryland and located permanently in Duplin (then New Hanover) Co., North Carolina, about the year 1744. [James O. Carr published this same information in 1901 and 1933.] His home place was on Elder, a branch of Maxwell Creek, and was purchased by him in two or more tracts from Captain Archibald Douglass, of the Kingdom of Great Britain and others. His land on Goshen, where he had lived for a short time, was sold to Capt. Joseph Grimes. Colonel Dickson was a merchant. He was well educated. His handwriting among the old records is a model of excellence.

" When the county of Duplin was formed from New Hanover in the year 1749, Colonel John Sampson became the first Register (now Register of Deeds), but on account of the excellence of Colonel Dickson's handwriting, the duties of that office were performed by him as the deputy Register. During the year 1751 he became Clerk of the County Court and served through the year 1762. At the same time he served as county Register from 1753 to 1762. He was a member of the Colonial Assembly in the year 1762 and a militia officer for many years. "Colonel Dickson died at his home on Elder, Christmas Day 1774, leaving a large and prominent family. . . The maiden name of his wife, or wives cannot now be given. Apparently, he was married twice. Two children were born in Ireland and the third child was born in Chester Co., Pennsylvania several years later than the first and second. Evidently two children born in Ireland were by a first wife and all others by a second wife. "

John Hamilton was born about 1746. Some claim he was born in 1752 in the Laggan Dist., Londonderry, Ireland. (The Connector of the Hamilton National Genealogical Society, 2001) He married Elizabeth Archer on 25 Oct 1774. He worked as justice and clerk of Guilford Co., North Carolina for many years. I have original papers that he signed relating to his brother-in-law Thomas Archer. Late in his life John was accorded the honorary title of “General.”

OBITUARY
"Friday, May 7, 1819, Raleigh Minerva
DIED, on the 25th January last, in Pulaski County, W. Tenn., whither he went last fall on a visit to a son-in-law and daughter, GENERAL JOHN HAMILTON of Guilford, N. C. He was one of GEN. GREEN’S aides on the day of the battle fought at Guilford Court House on the 15th March, 1781, and was active in gaining our independence."

Although it has been asserted that Hamilton was buried in the area of the McNairy Cemetery in 1819, there is no evidence of a marker or gravestone for him there today. Pat Kinsey notes that, "MANY graves were lost/destroyed in the Robert McNairy Cemetery of Giles Co, TN before a cemetery survey was taken. Gen John Hamilton is NOT shown on the cemetery survey as being buried there. He may have been and his grave marker was lost....OR he was buried elsewhere."

One comment on FindaGrave suggests that there may be errors here since there were several Hamilton families in the area at that time, but it doesn't suggest what the errors might be.
