Patsy Page lists George as dying 5 May 1923, but the 1910 census lists Catherine as a widow. I suspect he died earlier.

George married Catherine E. Garner on 6 May 1868 in York, South Carolina, United States. Catherine (daughter of Thomas Jefferson Garner and Lucinda Page) was born on 7 Jan 1853 in Union, South Carolina, United States; died on 22 Dec 1935 in Dardanelle, Yell, Arkansas, United States; was buried in Dec 1935 in Yell, Arkansas, United States. Some sources record this as 7 Jan 1852.

    Census:
The 1900 census says Catherine has had 13 children, 10 of whom are still alive.

    Census:
The 1910 census reports Catherine as a widow. George is not in the home, though Patsy Page elsewhere reports he died in 1923. The census says she has had 8 children, 6 of whom are still alive.

    Notes:

MILITARY: Jeff Garner was the only one of John Page's sons or sons-in-law who fought for the Confederacy; all others served the Union.

    Ref: [Military,,Jefferson GARNER], [Page,,Page93a]

Jeff Garner's wife, Lucinda, applied for a Confederate Widow's pension in Arkansas on 1902-08-21. Her widow's number was 13750. According to the pension index, Jeff died in 1883. Also listed in Yell County are veterans Arch Garner & Columbus F. Garner.

Not on 1884 York voters list

Garners do not appear in the York County, SC deeds. On further examination of the tax lists and the census, they do not appear to actually own land.

    Census:
Richard Page, age 40, is enumerated next door to Jeff & Lucinda.

    Military:
Jeff Garner enlisted in Co. E, 5th Regt. South Carolina Infantry on April 13, 1861, just days after the first shots were fired at Ft. Sumter. Through 1862, Jeff Garner moved into Co H (the 2nd company) of the same regiment due to reorganization. Beginning in January 1863, he is listed as being detailed to "extra or daily duty at Brigade Quarter Master" rather than in the line with the rest of the men of the unit. Many of the cards list him as a wagonmaster during this time. Finally, he was paroled at Appomattox at the end of the war, having served the entire war with no indication of injury.

From the National Park Service Solidiers and Sailors database: "5th Infantry Regiment, assembled during March and April, 1861, contained men recruited in Laruens, Lancaster, Spartanburg, and Union counties. It was ordered to Virginia and, serving in D.R. Jones' Brigade, saw action at First Manassas. Later it was placed in General R.H. Anderson's, M. Jenkins', and Bratton's Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Fredericksburg, then served in Longstreet's Suffolk operations and with D.H. Hill in North Carolina. Moving again with Longstreet, the unit did not arrive in time to take part in the Battle of Chickamauga, but was engaged at Knoxville. Returning to Virginia, it was conspicuous at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, in the trenches of Petersburg, and around Appomattox. This regiment reported 3 killed and 23 wounded at First Manassas and totalled 650 men in April, 1862. It sustained 21 casualties at Williamsburg, 81 at Gaines' Mill, 73 at Frayser's Farm, 39 during the Maryland Campaign, and 102 at Wauhatchie. In 1864 it lost 18 killed, 95 wounded, and 16 missing during The Wilderness Campaign, and from June 13 to December 31, there were 11 killed and 65 wounded. On April 9, 1865, the unit surrendered 19 officers and 263 men. The field officers were Colonels A. Coward, John R.R. Giles, and Micah Jenkins; Lieutenant Colonels Andrew Jackson, G.W.H. Legg, and John D. Wylie; and Majors Thomas C. Beckham, William M.Foster, and William T. Thomson."

There is a Charles Garner in Union County in 1840, but there are a lot of children in the house.

    Census:
Enumeration: 203001-110001, 9 people, no slaves

    Census:
In the 1850 Population Schedule and the Agricultural Schedule, it does not appear that Charles owns the land that he is farming. Looks like he is a tenant of someone else. The population schedule lists no real property and the agriculture schedule doesn't show acreage, only production.

    Possessions:
Like 1850, Charles shows no real property in the census, only personal property. So he likely does not own the land he is farming.

    Occupation:
In the household in 1870, there are Lemuel, Chister, and John, ages 9,6,1, that appear to be grandchildren, but it is not clear to whom they belong.

In 1870, Charles is listed with real property valued at $1000. So, finally he is a land owner.

    Census:
In 1880, Charles says that his parents were both from Virginia.

There is a grandchild, Chester, in the family in 1880, but I don't know who he belongs to. Probably Lemuel.

Charles married Ellen White. Ellen was born in 1805 in Union, South Carolina, United States; died on 30 Jul 1893 in Kelton, Union, South Carolina, United States; was buried in Kelton, Union, South Carolina, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Misc:
John Page witnessed the will of John Foster of Union County. Edmund Hames was one of the Executors.

Will mentions John Foster's daughter Nancy Page and her husband William Page. Not sure how William attaches. He may be John's brother.

Witnessing this will indicates a connection between Edmund Hames and John Page. It also places John Page in Union County on this date.

    Census:

This enumeration may put John one notch too old.

    Notes:

In the 1850 census, enumerated with James and Libbi Page (age 33) , cut off from the bottom of the census image, but listed in the index, are John and Judith Vaughn, ages 79 and 68. These appear likely to be Elizabeth Vaughn's parents. They are listed as paupers. Perhaps John and Elizabeth are both dead.

Is it the case that Libbi is Elizabeth Vaughn who married John Page? She appears far too young in this case to be the right person. Moreover, some source claims that Elizabeth died in 1846, while I find an Elizabeth Page enumerated in 1860 in Union County, but not with children that match the family she and John supposedly had.

Patsy Page reports that she had 9 children, 2 of whom died as infants.

On the other hand, Randolph Vaughn in Union County made a will in 1830 and named his daughter Elizabeth. He only gives a first name, so it's not clear if she is a Page or not.
