    • Census: 21 Aug 1850, Leake, Mississippi, United States
    • Possessions: 1 Oct 1859, Leake, Mississippi, United States; purchased 39.95 acres, 1 NESE CHOCTAW No 11N 8E 31
    • Census: 31 Aug 1860, Carthage, Leake, Mississippi, United States
    • Occupation: 31 Aug 1860, Carthage, Leake, Mississippi, United States; merchant with a personal estate of $500
    • Military: 8 May 1862, Carthage, Leake, Mississippi, United States; enlisted in Co. W, 6th Mississippi Reg't Volunteers, Capt. N.H. Allen's Company
    • Military: 30 Nov 1864, Franklin, Williamson, Tennessee, United States; listed with Confederate casualties

    Notes:

Lorenzo Dow Williams was killed during the Civil War near Franklin,TN. He was wounded on November 30, 1864 and died December 1. Some sources report his death as 1863.

However, I have not yet found a military service record. There is an Lorenzo Dow Williams in the Illinois Colored troops (not him) and one in the 24th Mississippi Inf. That one is also not him, since he was from Greene County, MS and was discharged in January 1862 from Fernandina, FL with injuries.

    Census:
In the 1850 census, the family next to Lorenzo's is a J.P. Williams, age 67. Possibly his grandfather. In that family is a Dixon Williams, age 17.

    Census:
In 1860, Lorenzo and Mary are located in Carthage, Mississippi, along with David Dixon, her father.

Lorenzo, enumerated as L.D. Williams, family 635 in Carthage, had a personal estate of $500 and is listed as a merchant. There is another L.D. Willams, just a couple of pages earlier, age 46 (so 20 years older), also a merchant, with a real eastate of $6000 and a personal estate of $21050. This older L.D. Williams must be the one listed in the slave schedule, since there are about 12 slaves listed in that household. $21050 is a much more reasonable estate for that family. This could be an uncle of Lorenzo since is father is supposed to be Solomon.

    Military:
Enlisted on 2 May 1862 in Co. W, 6th Mississippi Reg't Volunteers, Capt. N.H. Allen's Company for a period of 3 years. Age - 25 years. For the period 24 Jun 1862 to 1 Sept 1862, he is listed as on detached service.

Listed as promoted on 16 May 1863 to 3rd Corporal.

For July & August 1863, he is listed as absent without leave since 21 July 1863.

For Sept & Oct 1863, he is listed as absent without leave since 21 July 1863. Rank reduced from 3rd Corporal on 31 Aug 1863.

For Nov & Dec 1863, present.

For July & Aug 1864, present. Joined from desertion 20 May 1864.

No record of his death at the Battle of Franklin.

Lorenzo married Mary E. Dickson before 1854. Mary (daughter of David Dickson and Eliza W. Johnson) was born in 1835 in Alabama, United States; died before 1920 in Arkansas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary E. Dickson was born in 1835 in Alabama, United States (daughter of David Dickson and Eliza W. Johnson); died before 1920 in Arkansas, United States.

    • Census: 14 Jun 1900, Hickory Plains, Prairie, Arkansas, United States
    • Census: 3 May 1910, Hickory Plains, Prairie, Arkansas, United States

    Notes:

Mary E. Dixon came with her youngest brother and four children to DeSoto County, now Tate Co., MS.

Mary must have married A.J. Gates in Mississippi around 1872 since their daughter was born there in 1873. That means they did not move to Arkansas until after 1873.

    Census:
In 1900, Mary reports that she has had 4 children, three of whom are still alive in 1900.

    Census:
In 1910, Mary still reports 4 children, 3 alive.

    • Census: 4 Aug 1860, Leake, Mississippi, United States
    • Census: 16 Aug 1870, Desoto, Mississippi, United States

    Notes:

Of the children listed on the 1870 Census, I suspect that the younger 4 are children of Mary E. Dixon Williams. The dates just don't jive otherwise. Likewise, Lucy Vaugh listed there would likely be the mother of Elisa.

In the 1850 AL census, David Dixon had a son John who matches in age to my John H. Dickson. In 1860 in Leake Co., MS, we find him again with John 22 years old. Mary E Dickson, sister of John, moved to Tate Co, MS, to Coldwater after the war with four children and a brother William. Her husband, Lorenzo Dow Williams, was killed in a battle at Franklin, TN. All of this according to her g-grandson, Eric Williams.

NOTE: Uncertain, but looks likely. Might be descended from the Dicksons of Dickson County, TN, probably through Michael Dickson.

In Marengo Co., there are a lot of Dicksons already there in 1830. Likely connected - Joel, Samuel, N.F., Watson, Thomas.

In Desoto / Tate county, there are a large number of Dicksons who do not appear to be connected. The History of Tate County has a submitted history of a lot of them.

    Census:
Is this really the right David Dickson? Why would he start out in Tennessee, go pretty far south into Alabama, quickly come back to Tennessee, and then head back to Alabama and on to Mississippi? I am no longer really convinced that this is him.

    Census:
Interestingly, there is a Dixon's Mills in Marengo County.

Wikipedia - Beginning in the late 1820s, Joel B. Dixon, Sr. operated a water-powered gristmill at a dam that he and his sons built on Mill Creek along the old Linden-to-Choctaw Corner Road. The modern U.S. Route 43 bridge over Mill Creek now stands at the location. Dixon (January 11, 1777 – December 23, 1861), a native of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, was one of the early settlers of Marengo County. His business grew and eventually included a steam engine-driven sawmill and two steam-powered cotton gins. The mills remained in use into the first years of the 20th century. They were still standing in 1923, when they were demolished during the construction of Route 43.

    Died:
I originally had a death date of 1885, maybe from Eric Williams. But in 1880, Eliza is listed as a widow.

David married Eliza W. Johnson on 29 Jan 1835 in Marengo, Alabama, United States. Eliza was born in 1812 in Virginia, United States; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Eliza W. Johnson was born in 1812 in Virginia, United States; and died.

    Notes:

There is an E.W. Dickson listed in the 1880 census, Coldwater, Tate Co., Mississippi, listed as Mother in Law of J.F. Pardue and wife L.A. Pardue. David & Eliza have a daughter Lucy Ann.

The next house down is Bob Blackburn. There is a will for a John Dixon in 1900 that lists Bob Blackburn as his father in law. I am not sure who this John Dickson is, unless he is the John Dickson that I have called mine.
