    Notes:

Henry L. Cooper was born in Delaware, was a Maryland Revolutionary soldier, and moved to North Carolina where he married, 19 Jan 1794, Rebecca Hollis, daughter of John and Mary Hollis. They moved to Tennessee about 1814-15 to Rutherford County. He had three sons and two daughters. Some reports claim that the family lived in the Short Mountain area of Rutherford County.

    MARRIAGE: Cooper5

    N4, H2

Somehow, Henry Cooper is connected to Robert S. Cooper. There are too many common names in the church cemetery to not be connected.

    Misc:
This might be the same deed that was witnessed in 1820. In this case, the deed was presented to the County Court on 14 Sep 1819. David Hollis and Henry Cooper witnessed under oath that it was genuine and it was recorded.

    Died:
In 1836, Rebecca is recorded in the tax list. This means Henry is no longer living.

Henry married Rebecca Hollis on 19 Jan 1794 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States. Rebecca (daughter of John Hollis and Mary) was born before 1775 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died in 1855 in Cannon, Tennessee, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Rebecca Hollis was born before 1775 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States (daughter of John Hollis and Mary); died in 1855 in Cannon, Tennessee, United States.

    Notes:

Some sources record a second marriage for Rebecca to an Andrew Moore in Knox County, TN, but this does not make sense. The marriage isrecorded as 12 Aug 1812 in Knox Co, TN. If this were the case,Rebecca and Henry would have had to be divorced since he was still alive at that point. Likewise, she would have had to go east alone for this to happen. No mention of this was made in Elizabeth Cooper's Bible records. Also, were Rebecca to remarry, the record would have been recorded as Rebecca Cooper, not Rebecca Hollis. So, unless additional evidence comes to light, we will assume that this is another Rebecca Hollis.

CENSUS: Based on the 1790 enumeration of John Hollis, it would appear that this person occurs in that house. Likewise, in the 1800, 1820, 1830 enumerations of Henry Cooper support her position in this household, but does not explicitly list her.

    Residence:
Rebecca Cooper is listed as owning 266 acres worth $2660 and 1 slave worth $600. The fact that she is in the tax list means she owns the property and not Henry, so he must no longer be living.

    Residence:
Rebecca is taxed on 267 acres worth $3000 and 1 slave worth $700

    Census:
    Enumeration: 00101-00000001, 8 slaves, 11 people

    Notes:

    Notes:

!MILITARY: John Hollis was a Corporal in the Revolutionary War. He later rose to the rank of Orderly Seargent. He served for over two years in the NC Militia, first against the Cherokee Indians who had allied with the British, and then against the British and Tories. At the end of his service, he was 4th Orderly Seargent responsible for guarding prisoners of war.

There is another Capt. John Hollis who died in Wayne Co., TN, but he was from South Carolina.

Some record the name as Hallis and some say the name is HALLIS from DE.

DEED: Pruitt, p. 86, No. 574. Mar 10, 1778. John Hollis enters 400ac in Rowan Co on both sides of Indian Grave Br of Swearing Cr; border: improvement of Joseph Lanning & Peter Baker

DEED: 23 Sep 1808 - John (X) Hollis to Rich'd Owen for 1000 silver dollars, 581 1/2 ac on Indian Grave Br, Beaverdam Cr, and Swearing Crk, adj Joseph Lanning, Adam Helmshotler, John Ford, George Reed, this grant for Bennett Woods & Jacob Wagoner. Wit. Joseph Chaffin &Hezekiah Owen. Prud. Hezekiah Owen at Aug Ct 1810.

In Rowan County will book B, p. 120, there is a will for Martin Trentham in 1783 that mentions a Mary Trentham as a daughter. John Hollis and George Reed are named executors. This does not prove that Mary Trentham is the wife of John Hollis. I need more proof before believing this.

    Birth:
John's Revolutionary service affidavit, provided by his eldest son, recounts that John was born in or near London and came to the colonies at about the age of 14.

This gives a hint that John Hollis is connected to the Trentham family and that his wife could be Mary Trentham. Also worth pursuing is the connection to George Reed, a name that appears in Tennessee with the Hollises as well.

However, in the Rowan County cross-index of devisors and devisees, no Hollises are listed through 1825.

So, William Hollis in Rowan is closely connected to John Hollis. Maybe a brother.

This tells me that Henry Cooper & John Hollis were associates in Rowan County and that they did not move to Tennessee until after Feb 1796.

    Census:
    Enumeration: 01011-10201

    Census:

    FINDAGRAVE: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=14124236&

!BURIAL: John Hollis is buried in the Brawley Fork Cemetery, on the site of the original Brawley Fork Baptist Church, the first Baptist Church in Cannon Co., TN. This cemetery is on Barker Rd, just a couple of miles west of Woodbury, TN on US 70S. The cemetery is on as mall hill overlooking the highway and is in a pasture. Hollis descendants have fenced the cemetery from the rest of the pasture and have erected new stones using original stones for John Hollis and some of the other old graves. The Brawley Fork church removed to a new location years ago.

Data from Find A Grave shows the old, incorrect information about Mary Groom being the wife of John Hollis. But, it does have photos of the tombstones.

John married Mary about 1768 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States. Mary was born about 1737; died after 1810 in Rutherford, Tennessee, United States; was buried in Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Mary was born about 1737; died after 1810 in Rutherford, Tennessee, United States; was buried in Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee, United States.

    Notes:

Some researchers have suggested that Mary might be Mary Groom. However, other researchers have found the Mary Groom married to a John Hollis was some 100 years previous to this Mary. So, this is not the case. Likewise, some researchers have suggested that Mary was a Trantham, but no evidence has been presented for this hypothesis either. To date, Mary's identity and ancestry remain a mystery.

It is presumed that Mary is buried in the Brawley's Fork cemetery along with John Hollis, her husband.

CENSUS: Based on the enumeration of John Hollis, it would appear that this person occurs in that house.

Ted Hollis says that Jesse Hollis, son of Mary & John, in NC lives next to a family that includes all of the names Micajah, Hudson, etc.that are repeated in the Hollis family. Teddy feels like this family is Mary's family and carries her name, but he was unable to recall immediately what that name was. (10 Jul 2010)

    Notes:

    Married:
There is a Rowan County marriage record on 10 Jan 1791 for Mary Tranham and Jesse Rickmon. I suspect that this is the Mary named in Martin Trentham's will. This would lead me to suspect that, if John Hollis married a Mary Trantham, that she would perhaps be Martin's sister, in order to make the ages work out.

    Children:
    1. William Hollis was born about 1768 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died in 1846 in Cannon, Tennessee, United States.
    2. Elizabeth Hollis was born about 1770 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; and died.
    3. Jesse Hollis was born about 1772 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died in Caswell, North Carolina, United States.
    4. John Hollis was born about 1772 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died in Tennessee, United States.
    5. 3. Rebecca Hollis was born before 1775 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died in 1855 in Cannon, Tennessee, United States.
    6. David Hollis was born in 1776 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died on 16 Oct 1852 in Cannon, Tennessee, United States; was buried in Readyville, Cannon, Tennessee, United States.
    7. Hudson Hollis was born about 1779 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died in Ohio, United States.
    8. Mary Hollis was born about 1780 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died in Tennessee, United States.
    9. Micajah Randolph Hollis was born on 4 Aug 1782 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died on 12 Dec 1832 in McNairy, Tennessee, United States.
    10. Peggy Hollis was born about 1784 in Rowan, North Carolina, United States; died about 1810 in North Carolina, United States.
