    During the Civil War, Lunsford was away with the army and Pauline was living in Sardis, Panola County, Mississippi. One Sunday on the way to church, she was thrown from her buggy and died two hours later. Lunsford applied for leave to come home to tend his children and find them a place to live while he was in the service. Jere Cason journeyed to Sardis from Carrolton, Alabama to try to assist..
