    Notes:

Joseph and his parents may legitimately be missed in the 1930 census. In Weymouth, ED 11-139, the enumerations completely omits 246 Washington St. where the family lived for many years before and after.

Joseph married Alma Beatrice Ross on 16 Jul 1932 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Notes:

In the 1930 Census, the enumerator moves down Washington St. in ED 11-139 and skips right past 246 Washington St. Perhaps Michael and Nellie were temporarily living elsewhere, or the just not at home.

    Birth:
On the birth record, it records Michael F. Boyle as the son of John & Margaret Farley, but this just appears to be the way that the clerk has recorded things rather than an indication that "John Farley" was the father. The town birth record is for 1869 rather than 1868 (as seen elsewhere).

    Baptism:
Joseph A. Boyle and Catherine Boyle are sponsors.

    Census:
Michael is listed as a shoemaker in the 1900 census.

    Census:
Patrick and Bridgette Callahan are living next door.

    Census:
In 1940, Michael is listed as a cutter in a shoe factory.

Michael married Ellen Theresa Callahan on 30 Jan 1902 in Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Ellen (daughter of Patrick Callahan and Bridget H. Lyons) was born on 26 May 1872 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; died in 1947 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Notes:

According to the 1920 Census, Nellie's parents were from Ireland.

    Census:
The 1910 Census records Nellie has having had only one child, with one child still living. Perhaps the child registered as dead was considered a miscarriage since it was born dead.

    Census:
In 1920, Nellie reports that she was born in Massachucetts but that both her parents were born in Ireland.

    Died:
In the 1953 Weymouth city directory, it lists Nellie as Michael Boyle's wife, even though she had already died.

    Notes:

    Married:
One record says this was in Weymouth, but it's in the Randolph town records.

    1. 2. Joseph Francis Boyle was born on 8 Mar 1904 in Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; died on 11 Mar 1967 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States.

    Notes:

According to the family story, Charlie Ross left the family in 1907, leaving Cora with three small daughters.

I am beginning to suspect that the Charlie F. Ross who married Fannie White might not be the right person.

In 1910, there is a Charles Ross living in Brockton that is the right age and may well be this Charles. He and his wife of three years, Fannie, are living as boarders in the home of Aaron Burnham. This would coincide with his abandonment of his family in 1907. It would mean that either he chose to remarry without getting a divorce or he and Cora were divorced. This needs further research. At the time of the 1910 Census, he was living only a few blocks away from his daughter Rotha, who was separated from the rest of the family.

It appears that sometime around 1907, Charles left the family - his wife and children. By 1910, he was close by living as husband and wife with Fannie White, but they had not yet married. In 1916, they married in Vermont and settled there as if they had never married before.

However, the parents listed on the Charles Ross / Cora Hooper marriage record do not match the ones for the Charles Ross / Fannie White record in Vermont. So far, I cannot find Charles in any record prior to his 1900 census, nor can I find either set of parents

Ross / Hooper set - Henry C Ross and Mary Paulding
Ross / White set - George F Ross and Elizabeth W Baldwin

While the marriage of Cora and Charles took place in Whitman, there are no Whitman records in the Mass. Town & Vital Records Collection.

2020-01-14 - Just because the marriage register for Charles & Cora lists their parents, that does not mean that their parents are still alive. They could already be dead. I do find an Henry A.C. Ross on the pauper roles around 1900. But there is no reason to connect him. Finding an 1880 census record in Boston would really help.

    Birth:
The statewide index to births lists a Charles (twin) born in 1879 in Boston, volume 306, page 23. The only other twin born in 1879 in Boston is Martha W, also on the same page of the registry. However, these are the children of Citifore and Mary Ross, a black couple.

Though, I don't necessarily believe a lot else about Charles, on both his WWI and WWII draft cards, he gives his birthday at 18 Mar 1879 and is generally consistent in saying he was born in Boston.

    Census:
Charles is a boarder in 1900 and is listed as a driver. Interestingly, he is living at 65 Pleasant St, at the corner of Pleasant and Thayer St. His mother-in-law was Salome Thayer.

    Census:
In 1910, Charles is listed as a boarder with Fannie Ross in Brockton. This seem sort of questionable as there are 2 additional marriage records for him in Rhode Island and in Vermont in Nov 1916.

They both claim this as a first marriage. Looks like someone else provided the data. It appears that Charlie divorced Cora and married Fannie.

Moreover, Fannie is really Fannie White and could be related to Fred White (does not appear to be the case).

    Census:
This census records that he was 26 at the time of his first marriage. However, he would have been 21 when he and Cora married and 37 when he and Fannie married.

    Census:
This records says that Charles only completed 5th grade and that Fannie had 1 year of High School. They rent the house for $35/month. Both work in a shoe factory.

    Residence:
    Found at the same address in 1945, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1957, 1961

    Misc:
I think this is the date when he claimed social security, not when he died. He shows up in city directories until the early 1970s.

    Census:
Charles is 71, Fannie is 65, both from Massachusetts. He made $1400 for the year and has not served in the military.

    Died:
Mrs. Fannie White Ross is the informant, but she provides no details for his parents at all. But that does indicate that this is the same Charles F. Ross who was in Brockton, Mass in 1910.

Charles married Cora Stetson Hooper on 26 Jan 1901 in Whitman, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States, and was divorced on 10 Oct 1910 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Cora (daughter of Walter S. Hooper and Sarah Oldham Peterson) was born on 31 Aug 1879 in South Abington, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; died on 25 Jun 1980 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Whitman, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Notes:

    Birth:
Birth record for Alma says Cora was born in Whitman.

    Residence:
Mrs. Cora Ross, employee of the Regal Co.

    Census:
In the 1910 Census, Cora is listed as married and having been married for 9 years, but Charlie is no where to be seen. Cora is also listed as having had 3 children, but only two are alive. Rotha, her middle daughter is not in the household.

    Residence:
Mrs. Cora Ross, Listed as shoeworker

    Residence:
Mrs. Cora Ross listed as shoeworker

    Census:
In the 1920 Census, Cora is listed as widowed. However, Frederick, also listed as widowed, is a boarder in the house. Looks like they found a mutually agreeable arrangement.

    Notes:

It appears that perhaps Margaret's family came to the US prior to 1850 since they are not found in the 1850 census.

Since I find Margaret in the 1910 Census but not the 1920 Census (yet), I suspect that she died between 1910 and 1920.

    Birth:
In the 1930 census, Margaret's children John, Catherine, and Alice report that she is from Northern Ireland.

    Immigration:
Margaret immigrated as a child, presumably with her parents, in 1851, according to the 1900 Census.

    Census:
According to the 1900 Census, Margaret is a widow. She has had 8 children, of whom, 7 are still living. That means that either John or Joseph died between 1880 and 1900.

    Census:
The 1910 census lists Margaret and her parents as from Ir. English, rather than just Ireland. I believe this was done to distinguish Northern Ireland from Ireland.

She is listed as having had 8 children, 7 of whom are alive.

    Notes:

    Married:
Marriage record says Margaret's mother was Catherine McLaughlin, but it seems more likely to have been Sheridan.

    Immigration:
    The 1900 Census says 1868. 1920 says 1867. 1910 Census says 1870

    Naturalization:
    1900 Census says 1868, 1920 says 1870

There appears to be a naturalization petition for Patrick Callahan, with witnesses Patrick Gloster and Solomon Wright. Callahan was born in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland about 1847. Arrived at New York, 1 Jun 1863. Petition for Naturalization in Boston on 4 Nov 1876. Found in Massachusetts, State and Federal Naturalization Records, 1798-1950

    Census:
In 1880, there are seven families enumerated at dwelling 73 in Weymouth with Patrick and his family. Either this was an apartment house or a real mess. Both Patrick and Bridget report that they and their parents are from Ireland.

    Census:
In 1910, Patrick and Bridget are enumerated next door to their daughter Nellie and her husband Michael F. Boyle. In 1900, it was noted that Patrick and Bridget were married 30 years. Here, they are married 38 years. He is listed as immigrating in 1870 instead of 1868 and she in 1866. This means that they were likely married in Massachusetts and came separately.

    Census:
By 1920, Patrick is no longer listed as head of household. He is residing in his son's home. Bridget is gone, presumably dead. He is list as immigrating in 1867 and being naturalized in 1870.

Patrick married Bridget H. Lyons on 10 Jul 1870 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Bridget (daughter of Patrick Lyons and Mary Scanny) was born in Aug 1848 in Ireland; died on 15 Jan 1913 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried on 17 Jan 1913 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Immigration:
Have not yet found a record here. Possible matches:
Bridget Lyons, age 20, F, Spinster, arriving 17 Oct 1867 aboard the Pennsylvania.

Bridget Lyons, age 20, arriving 10 May 1866 to New York on the Star of the West, origin Ireland.

Bridget Lyons, age 19, arrival aboard the Aleppo in Boston, 5 Oct 1868 (from Liverpool). Seems most likely.

    Census:
1900 Census reports that Bridget and Patrick were married in about 1870 (30 years in 1900) and that Bridget had had 6 children, four of whom where still living. Her naturalization status is covered by her husband's.

    Census:
In 1910, Bridget is listed as 65 years old and Michael is 55. Her age is more close to correct, but his is wrong. She also reports having had 7 children, of whom 4 are living rather than 6 children.

Bridgette reports that that she immigrated in 1866.

    Notes:

So far, we have not yet found a death date for Sarah. She does not appear in the Massachusetts 1920 or 1930 census. Nor in the town records or death indexes. It seems unlikely that she moved away but we have not found a death record.

There is a story in the Boston Globe about a Sarah Hooper, elderly (62 years), paralytic, who was being transported to the state hospital at Tewksbury and got stuck in a hearse for 8 hours. But, our Sarah Hooper is in Whitman in 1917-1920.

    Census:
Sarah is enumerated in her father's home in 1900. There is a Benjamin F. Peterson next door who may be an older brother. She is listed as divorced and as having 3 children, all three of whom are still living. Sarah notes that she had three children, all of whom are still living in 1910.

    Census:
In 1910, Sarah is living as a boarder. She reports that she is a widow and that 2 of her 3 children are living.
