    Notes:

This Minnie and Minnie Jones may be confused, especially since Granddad says Minnie Jones married a Shipplett.

According to Crawford Co., AR Marriage Book G, Minnie Dickson, age 22, married George W. Shipplett, age 22, on 18 May 1902. The marriage was solemnized by W.C. Gentry, J.P.

    Birth:
Census says October, delayed birth certificate says November.

To add more confusion, the birth certificate says John was 32 at the time of her birth, when it appears he was more like 43. It says Martha / Susie was 29, which seems

Her obituary says she was born in 1877.

    Census:
The 1910 census records that George and Minnie have been married 8 years and she has had just one child.

    Census:
In the 1930 Census, Minnie reports that her father was born in Kansas and her mother born in Alabama. Her mother (Martha) reports that she and both her parents were born in Alabama.

    Census:
Minnie's half-sister Addi Mullen is living on the same property, presumably in a home in the back yard, with her daughter Geneva.

    Notes:

We know very little about John H. Dickson. In the 1880 US Census, he reports that his father was from Tennessee and his mother was from Virginia. By the 1900 US Census, we find his family in the household of Jack A. Jones in Arkansas. From this, we can deduce that he died sometime between 1880 and 1900, most probably before 1889, based on the ages of the children of Jack A. Jones and his wife.

According to Eric Beard, John H. Dickson was the son of David and Elisa Dickson. This family lived in Talladega, AL at the time of John's birth, later moving to Leake Co., MS. At some point, John's sister Mary E. Dickson and her husband Lorenzo Dow Williams, along with John's brother William, moved from Leake Co., to Desoto Co., MS. It seems likely that John must have joined them there.

While many deeds are recorded during this time in Desoto and Tate Co.,MS, for William Dickson, the only records of John Dickson in Desoto Co., MS are a marriage record for J.H. Dickson to Martha A. Taylor and a mention in the 1873 tax assessment. In the 1880 US Census, John's wife is in fact recorded as Martha A. Dickson, so this appears to be the correct marriage record. However, no Taylor family has yet been found to place Martha in a family.

The 1873 tax assessment of Desoto Co, MS shows J.H. Dickson owning 80 acres.

The 1880 census of Prairie Co, AR shows him and his family. It shows his mother as from VA and his dad from TN. The 1890 census is lost, but 1900 shows his wife(?) and his children in the home of Jack A.Jones in Sebastian Co. From this, we can guess that he died around 1889.

While no family for Martha Taylor has been found, the 1870 US Census of Desoto Co., MS includes a family of William Taylor. Enumerated with this family is a J. Dickson, age 21. No Martha is in this family, however. Assuming that John is part of the family of David Dixon, in 1870, he is enumerated with his parents.

According to Rhonda Dickson, wife of David Noyle Dickson, grandson of Cecil Dickson, John Dickson married Martha Taylor. They knew this as factual, so the marriage records found in MS are the right ones.

MARRIAGE: IGI M516483, 1051 Need better Marriage Record.

I believe John served in the Confederacy - 33rd Miss Inf., enlisted in Carthage

Records in Crawford county are sketchy at best. There are limited probate indexes and even fewer actual records. No deeds to speak of. Limited tax records.

    Birth:
Eric Williams reports John H. Dickson's birth as 1838.

    Military:
I am confident that this John Dickson is the one in Co. F. Co. F of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry was organized in Carthage, Leake Co., Mississippi. John was enumerated in the 1860 Census in this county, where Carthage was the county seat. I have not found any other John Dickson in the county.

    https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-battle-units-detail.htm?battleUnitCode=CMS0033RI

    Military:
While in the hospital, John was assigned extra duty as a nurse.

    Military:
Service card says that John rejoined his unit after desertion, losing several cartridges to his rifle along the way. He is demoted to Pvt from Cpl.

    Died:
I have always thought that John had to have died by 1889 because his wife remarried to Jack A. Jones in 1890. However, he appears in the 1892 list of voters who have paid the poll tax. If he paid a poll tax in 1892, he had to be alive.

That means that perhaps there was a divorce between him and Martha.

Or the record of the voter list is wrong.

So, for now, I will note the new death date, but consider that he may have died before 1890.

John married Martha A. Taylor on 12 Sep 1872 in Desoto, Mississippi, United States. Martha was born in Sep 1858 in Alabama, United States; died on 11 Sep 1931 in Creek, Oklahoma, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Census: 11 Apr 1930, Creek Township, Creek, Oklahoma, United States

    Notes:

Martha remains a mystery. While a marriage record for a J.H. Dickson to Martha A. Taylor exists in Desoto Co., MS in 1873, no other Taylor information has been found. In 1870, a J. Dickson appears to be enumerated with a Wm. Taylor family in Desoto Co. But no Martha is in that family.

In the 1880 Prairie Co., AR census, Martha and John Dickson are enumerated. However, after that, Martha's name gets difficult to trace. She is enumerated with Jack A. Jones in 1900, but the name given is Emma. Maybe that's M. A. One of her step-daughters was named Emma, as well. However, in the marriage return for her marriage to Jack Jones, she is listed as Mrs. Sue Dickson.

    MARRIAGE: IGI M516843, 1051

Though I found her in the 1880 census for sure, I'm not certain about 1900. I found the household of Jack A. Jones, her second husband, as well as her children in this household. But, in 1880, she is listed as Martha A. and in 1900 she is listed as Emma S. The length of the marriage is such, though that I think this must be the same person. Her father and mother are reported from GA in 1900. 1900 census lists her birthdate as Sept. 1858.

Perhaps the key to finding Martha is to concentrate on her children by her second marriage. Maybe the Jones family has some information. Moreover, Clida Taylor is listed as a step-niece of Jack Jones in the 1900 census. That gives credence to the Taylor connection. Probably she is the daughter of one of Martha's brothers. Look for Taylors near the Jones family in Arkansas, as well as near them in Mississippi and Alabama (near Dicksons).

In the 1880 census, Martha reports that she has had 6 children, of whom 5 are living. In the 1910 census, it says she has had only 1 child. From this, I would surmise that there were two children with Jack Jones, one of whom who died

Perhaps, she was Martha Susannah Taylor. There is a Taylor family on the next page of the census in 1870 with a Susannah, age 12, which would fit Martha. See Desoto Co, T5R7, dwelling 372. It appears that her mother is Martha and that she has an older brother W. A. Taylor. This leaves us still with no father for her.

    ---
Given that Martha A. Taylor is later on known as Susannah, let's focus on that.

Just one page over from the David Dickson family in the 1870 census, there is a W.A. Taylor family with a daughter, Susannah. She was born in 1858 in Alabama, which is consistent with what has always been reported for the wife of John H. Dickson. This may be a really good lead. This family is headed by W.A. Taylor, but he is only 22 years old. I would propose that he is an older brother to Susannah. There is a Martha that is 40 years old that is likely the mother.

    Birth:
Based on census responses, her parents might have been from Georgia or Alabama. She was likely born 1856-1858. There are several likely candidate families in Alabama and Mississippi that need more research to narrow down which might be hers.

Minnie's delayed birth certificate says she was born in Tennessee and was 29 when Minnie was born.

    Name:
She seems to have gone by both names.

    Census:
In the famiy of George W Shifflett & Minnie Z Shifflett, a Martha S Anner is listedas George's mother-in-law. Since he has been married only once, this must be Minnie's mother. So this is our Martha / Susan. She is listed as 64 years old and widowed, born in Alabama.

    Census:
In 1930, Martha is shown as Martha Jones, living in the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Oklahoma. She says that she is 73 years old (b. abt. 1857) and was 16 when she was first married. That's a bit later than earlier censuses would indicate.

    Died:
In the Oklahoma death index, there is a Martha A. Jones listed as having died on 11 Sep 1931. However, the death certificates are not open records in Oklahoma and require considerable proof to obtain. Therefore, this may not be a great record to pursue to get more data on Martha.
