    Frances Bernice Gilbert
    December 7, 1910 - September 25, 2008

Frances Bernice Gilbert of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma was born on December 7, 1910 in Tamaha, Oklahoma to John William and Cnatha(Gamble) Tennison and passed from this life on Thursday, September 25, 2008 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma at the age of 97 years. Bernice grew up around the Muskogee area, and on August 10, 1930 she married W.A. Gilbert in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Bernice worked at Boulder Bank in Tulsa until retirement. She had resided in Pauls Valley for 33 years. Her favorite hobby was knitting baby caps for the Pauls Valley General Hospital nursery. Bernice was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pauls Valley. The highlight of her life was her family. The most important things she taught others about life were that tomorrow will be a better day and that when your family is in need you must be there for them. Bernice lived what she taught by always being there for her family no matter when, where or for how long. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by daughter – Allene Chaufty and her husband, Raymond of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; two grandsons – Jim Chaufty and his wife, Teresa of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Bill Chaufty and his wife, Sharon of Stillwater, Oklahoma; four great-grandchildren – Tracy Chaufty of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Kyle Chaufty of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dr. April Lai and husband, Dr. Joe Lai of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Dylan Chaufty; five great-great-grandchildren – Simone Chaufty, Jeremiah Chaufty, Cooper Lai, Olivia Lai, and Fisher Lai; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gilbert is preceded in death by her husband, W.A. Gilbert, and four sisters. Funeral services for Frances Bernice Gilbert are scheduled for Monday, September 29, 2008 at 1 p.m. in the Wooster Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Joe Elam officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Wooster Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pauls Valley, P.O. Box 490, Pauls Valley, OK 73075. You may send a condolence to the family at www.woosterfuneralhomes.com.

    Notes:

    Birth:
1900 Census has a completely crazy birth date.
Findagrave says he was born in Newton County, Arkansas.

    Census:
This must be the correct William Tennyson. He and Martha have recently married. And he has been in this area for the last couple of years. But, the birth date for him is wrong. It says Oct 1872. His parents did not marry until 1874 and he was born in 1877. It also says he was born in Alabama with parents from somewhere unknown. It appears that someone else must have reported this information.

    Census:
Location is 1 house number off from where it had been for years. I think the census may have the wrong house number.

    Notes:

Lived in AR, around Polk county. Had a saw mill with Zenas TENNYSON. Bill died of blood poisoning. He got a splinter building a table. His wife took the splinter out with a needle. He then went on that day to butcher a hog. Perhaps he got infected then.

1870 Census lists him as Wm. J.B. Tennison and says he was born in Alabama.

    Died:
Why does this say Yell County? I thought he lived around Polk County. In 1880, he was in Pike County.

    • Misc: 21 Oct 1902, Stigler, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, United States; Rejected claim as member of Mississippi Choctaw Nation

    Notes:

Mary Susan Druscilla was 16 when she was married. The marriage to John W.B. Tennyson was not well thought of by either set of parents. To solve the problem of no consent, they sent a black man to the courthouse to get the marriage license. When he came back with it,they just crossed out the race, changed it to white, and got married. This marriage record has not yet been found, but it could be recorded as either black or white. Her first marriage could have been in Choctaw or Pontotoc Co, MS. After J.W.B. Tennyson died, she remarried to Mr. Phillips. He was not well liked by the first family and was regarded as a mean person by his stepchildren.

    Ref: [,1970,gm1]

    Birth:
Her second marriage lists that she was about 30 years old.

    Census:
The 1900 census lists her as Susan Phillips and her children Frank and Larkin as Phillips, though they retained the name Tennyson. She is listed as widowed, born Feb 1858 in Mississippi. She had had 5 children, 4 of whom are still living. All of these facts match the rest of what we know about her already.

    Residence:
"Mrs. M.S. Phillips has returned from Lancaster, where she went to visit her father J.W. Deshazo."
