OCCUPATION: Streetcar Driver, Owned a shoe repair shop.

    granddad

His father died when the children where very young. His mother then remarried. The new husband never allowed any discussion of the previous marriage, hence information past this point is likely lost. Left home around the age of 14, since he didn't get along well with his step-father. Worked for the railroads in and around Fort Smith, AR. Drove streetcars in Fort Smith until they were discontinued. After . the streetcars shut down, he opened a shoe repair shop. Granddad worked with him in the shop for a while.

ACTION: Get the address of this store from Granddad. The store is now a Harley Davidson shop.

Southwest Times Record: Ex-Street Car Man Opens Shoe Repair Shop -R.H. Dickson, formerly for years a faithful street car motorman, has just opened a shoe repair shot at 19 North Ninth St, across from the Tribune. Mr. Dickson has installed machinery and equipment and is now well prepared to render good service.

Robert was a motorman until the Ft. Smith streetcars shut down on November 3, 1933. After that, he opened his shoe shop. He had done some shoe repair as a young man. Once he left the street car line, a cousin George taught him what he needed to open his own shop. Shortly after opening his store downtown, a space came open at "The Junction",much nearer to the house, so he moved his store there. Granddad worked with him for several years before marrying and moving to California. Prior to working on the streetcar, Robert had worked in a steel foundry and had seriously injured his back. He and two other men were carrying a long steel beam. The man in the middle lost his grip and dropped his load. That left only Robert in the back and another man in the front. When the man in the front then lost his grip, Robert was injured, having his back muscles pretty badly torn. From then on, he was unable to do any sort of heavy lifting.

    Census:
I am skeptical of this record. There is another Robert Dickson who shows up in Texarkana that could be this person.

In the 1900 Census, Robert is enumerated as boarder and farm laborer east of Broken Bow, OK. One discrepancy is that his father is listed as being born in Georgia.

    Occupation:
I am skeptical of this record.

    Census:
Robert is listed as a lodger in the home of Bert E. Anderson.

    Census:
Between 1930 and 1935, the city of Fort Smith renumbered streets at Divison St. so that 14th St became 29th St.

MILITARY: Richard I. Dickson served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross as well as five Bronze Stars for his actions during the war. Richard enlisted 31 July 1942. (I can find nothing to back up Richard's decorations. This is based on a brief news article found in Ethel Garner's things. Researching this appears that it is a confusion with another Richard Dickson)

Richard and Louise had no children.

    From Cheryl Gilbert on Facebook:
    Hi Scott-
I don't really know much about Uncle Dick's WWII service. My dad was stationed in Europe and I seem to remember them talking about it, but I was a kid and didn't pay much attention.
Here is what I do know:
He and Aunt Louise both worked for the County of Los Angeles in the Flood Control District. They wanted to have kids, but were unable to. At one time they were going to adopt, which was a long and arduous undertaking back then. They had gotten close to the top of the list and they decided to move to a house with a bigger backyard. They had no idea that if you moved you had to start the whole process over again. They figured that by the time they got to the top of the list again they would be too old so they dropped it.
They always had dogs. I remember them having two cocker spaniels at one time and later on I think they had a golden retriever, but I'm not sure about that.
They both retired from the County in the late 70s (I think). I remember going to Uncle Dick's retirement dinner. Aunt Louise didn't have one as she had taken a medical retirement. She had polio as a child and even though there was no paralysis, she always had health problems. She died after a long illness and Uncle Dick was never the same after that.
About a year after she died he decided to go to Arkansas to visit family. He bought a new car for the trip. He was supposed to be gone 2-3 weeks and I thought he would call me when he got there, but I didn't hear from him. I waited about 3 /12 weeks and called; he said he got as far as the California border and was so lonely he turned around and came back. I guess he was too embarrassed to call and tell me.
In the last year of his life his health declined and he had been hospitalized a few times. The last time he was in the hospital I was there visiting and he told me that he thought it would be best if he went into a nursing home, at least for awhile and asked me to find one for him. I called the hospital the next day to see if they had an affiliation with a nursing home and he had died during the night. I was very upset that they didn't call me.
His best friend was named Norm Plater and he was also Uncle Dick's attorney and a fellow member of his Masonic Lodge. Norm made the arrangements for the Masonic funeral. Norm has probably passed away by now.
Uncle Dick had a great sense of humor and he and my dad were always pulling practical jokes on each other. I'm pretty sure that he played golf. I don't remember ever meeting any of his family.
That's all that I can remember right now.
Look forward to hearing from you on Facebook!

    Hi Scott-
Richard Dickson was my uncle my marriage; he was married to Louise Jones, who was my father's sister. I remember Uncle Dick very well. They lived fairly close to us in Southern California and we used to see them pretty often. I also spent time with them a few summers when I was a child. I assume that you know that he was very active in Masons (I seem to remember that he was a 32nd degree Mason) and had a Masonic funeral. He and my aunt are buried in Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Calif. I have visited the graves a few times.
I will be happy to share my family tree with you. I am working on the Jones line and finding it very frustrating as they repeated names in every generation. I think I have some pictures of Uncle Dick and Aunt Louise and will try to upload them.
If you're on Facebook my name is Cheryl Gilbert.

Robert served in the 40th Infantry Division of the US Army, 108th Battalion. Though he did not actively seek to enlist, due to the fact that he had two small children, when he was called for the draft, he did not seek deferment. He trained at Camp B. in Florida before shipping out to the Philippine Islands. He arrived on Leyte island in the spring of 1945 after the fighting in Europe had already ended and participated in battle there. Given the choice between being a machine gunner and an mortar man, he selected the mortar. He said that he would much rather be back behind the mountain than out in front just making the enemy mad. He was the 2nd gunner in an mortar team, carrying the mortar tube itself. His unit served in the Philippines through the end of hostilities and them moved to Korea in October 1945 to serve with the occupation forces there. During his time in Korea,Robert served as a truck driver.

While in the Army, Robert received his marksman medal, a good conduct medal, and campaign ribbons for the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and the Liberation of the Philippines Campaign. He served 16 months in the army and returned home in June 1946. His serial number from his dog-tag was 38732441 T44.

Granddad says that he and Grandmother met on June 8, 1938. They were at a church youth meeting. She knew who he was but he didn't know her. They met and talked. He walked her home, since she lived close to him. He walked her home the next week as well. After that, she was babysitting on a regular basis and would take the child she was babysitting to the drug store for a soda. He would meet up with her there and talk. After they met one another, they neither one ever dated anyone else.

Granddad died peacefully around 5pm on Monday, July 2, 2007.

DEATH: 6 Feb 1992: This morning, Ralph died as a result of complications from a kidney transplant. He had been suffering from poly-cystic kidney disease and had received a transplanted kidney from his brother, Bob. Rejection set in, and he entered the hospital just before Christmas 1991. After several attempts at beating the rejection, he was moved from Little Rock, AR to Pittsburgh to be apart of an experimental procedure. None of these worked either, and he eventually just failed to respond any further. He died about 3:30 this morning.
