    Notes:

We know very little about John H. Dickson. In the 1880 US Census, he reports that his father was from Tennessee and his mother was from Virginia. By the 1900 US Census, we find his family in the household of Jack A. Jones in Arkansas. From this, we can deduce that he died sometime between 1880 and 1900, most probably before 1889, based on the ages of the children of Jack A. Jones and his wife.

According to Eric Beard, John H. Dickson was the son of David and Elisa Dickson. This family lived in Talladega, AL at the time of John's birth, later moving to Leake Co., MS. At some point, John's sister Mary E. Dickson and her husband Lorenzo Dow Williams, along with John's brother William, moved from Leake Co., to Desoto Co., MS. It seems likely that John must have joined them there.

While many deeds are recorded during this time in Desoto and Tate Co.,MS, for William Dickson, the only records of John Dickson in Desoto Co., MS are a marriage record for J.H. Dickson to Martha A. Taylor and a mention in the 1873 tax assessment. In the 1880 US Census, John's wife is in fact recorded as Martha A. Dickson, so this appears to be the correct marriage record. However, no Taylor family has yet been found to place Martha in a family.

The 1873 tax assessment of Desoto Co, MS shows J.H. Dickson owning 80 acres.

The 1880 census of Prairie Co, AR shows him and his family. It shows his mother as from VA and his dad from TN. The 1890 census is lost, but 1900 shows his wife(?) and his children in the home of Jack A.Jones in Sebastian Co. From this, we can guess that he died around 1889.

While no family for Martha Taylor has been found, the 1870 US Census of Desoto Co., MS includes a family of William Taylor. Enumerated with this family is a J. Dickson, age 21. No Martha is in this family, however. Assuming that John is part of the family of David Dixon, in 1870, he is enumerated with his parents.

According to Rhonda Dickson, wife of David Noyle Dickson, grandson of Cecil Dickson, John Dickson married Martha Taylor. They knew this as factual, so the marriage records found in MS are the right ones.

MARRIAGE: IGI M516483, 1051 Need better Marriage Record.

I believe John served in the Confederacy - 33rd Miss Inf., enlisted in Carthage

Records in Crawford county are sketchy at best. There are limited probate indexes and even fewer actual records. No deeds to speak of. Limited tax records.

    Birth:
Eric Williams reports John H. Dickson's birth as 1838.

    Military:
I am confident that this John Dickson is the one in Co. F. Co. F of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry was organized in Carthage, Leake Co., Mississippi. John was enumerated in the 1860 Census in this county, where Carthage was the county seat. I have not found any other John Dickson in the county.

    https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-battle-units-detail.htm?battleUnitCode=CMS0033RI

    Military:
While in the hospital, John was assigned extra duty as a nurse.

    Military:
Service card says that John rejoined his unit after desertion, losing several cartridges to his rifle along the way. He is demoted to Pvt from Cpl.

    Died:
I have always thought that John had to have died by 1889 because his wife remarried to Jack A. Jones in 1890. However, he appears in the 1892 list of voters who have paid the poll tax. If he paid a poll tax in 1892, he had to be alive.

That means that perhaps there was a divorce between him and Martha.

Or the record of the voter list is wrong.

So, for now, I will note the new death date, but consider that he may have died before 1890.

John married Martha A. Taylor on 12 Sep 1872 in Desoto, Mississippi, United States. Martha was born in Sep 1858 in Alabama, United States; died on 11 Sep 1931 in Creek, Oklahoma, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Probably from Desoto Co, Miss. He left home around the age of 16 due to not getting along real well with his step-father. Had a number of children including Joe, Edwin, and Arty, plus some other sons and daughters. Cecil killed himself. R.H. Dickson traveled from Fort Smith to Rudy for the funeral in the caboose of a freight train. He made the round trip in a single day. It is likely that Cecil, his family and his parents might be buried near the church they attended in Rudy.

(R.D. is Artie - He was listed wrong on the census.)

In addition to the children listed, there were at least a couple of girls whose names Granddad did not recall. R.D. is the youngest and could be Robert D. There is a auto garage along Highway 71 north of Fort Smith owned by a Dickson who is the illegitimate child of R.D. According to Crawford County Marriage Book E, Cecil Dickson, age 19, married Zena Jones, age 16, on 21 Aug 1895. The marriage was performed by J. Brim.

OCCUPATION: By way of occupation, Cecil was a farmer and cotton laborer.

CALLED: Some list Cecil as Cecil Noel, but more, who have closer knowledge, call him Cecil Noyle Dickson

    23 Feb 2001 - From Millie McGrane:

Kathleen O'Kelly, just 1/2 mile from where it all happened, relates: I called a member of the Hunter family today to ask why Cecil Noel Dickson killed himself. He told me that Cecil was a kind man, who worried a lot. Apparently, Cecil had mortgaged the farm at Citizen Bank. Due to the depression at the time (1931) and possibly a crop failure, he could not make the payment on the mortgage. This upset Cecil very much. One morning, he went into Rudy and some men there were razzing him about the bank taking the farm. This upset him very much. Cecil went back home and ate dinner. Then he got his 22 rifle to go squirrel hunting. Along in the late afternoon when he had not returned, Zenia decided to send the boys to look for him. When they returned without finding him, she thought for a little while and told one of the boys "I know where he is. Go look in the old house." This old house was to the left and up on the hill from the house they lived in. They went there and looked in the window. There sat Cecil against the wall, with the gun braced on a stick of wood. He had shot himself, the 10th of November 1931 and he died. He was buried in the Mt. McCurry Cemetery which was not very far from his home. The farm that Cecil mortgaged was known at the time as the old Jones place. It had apparently belonged to Zenia's family. The next generation called it the old Dickson place. The new generation calls it where the Stallings live. It is a pretty valley. The banker who repossessed the farm allowed Zenia and the children to continue to live there. Joe was still at home and he ran the farm. They still had their chickens, cows, pigs, and horses, as these were not mortgaged. Their family did pretty well and did not go hungry. They were as prosperous as the other families in that area at the time. I do not know Cecil's parents names. They can probably be found in the census records for Crawford or Mississippi Co, AR. Cecil's occupation was apparently farmer, but the family also picked cotton as did all the other families in the fall. It was extra money for all.

    Sincerely, Kathleen O'Kelley

OCCUPATION: Streetcar Driver, Owned a shoe repair shop.

    granddad

His father died when the children where very young. His mother then remarried. The new husband never allowed any discussion of the previous marriage, hence information past this point is likely lost. Left home around the age of 14, since he didn't get along well with his step-father. Worked for the railroads in and around Fort Smith, AR. Drove streetcars in Fort Smith until they were discontinued. After . the streetcars shut down, he opened a shoe repair shop. Granddad worked with him in the shop for a while.

ACTION: Get the address of this store from Granddad. The store is now a Harley Davidson shop.

Southwest Times Record: Ex-Street Car Man Opens Shoe Repair Shop -R.H. Dickson, formerly for years a faithful street car motorman, has just opened a shoe repair shot at 19 North Ninth St, across from the Tribune. Mr. Dickson has installed machinery and equipment and is now well prepared to render good service.

Robert was a motorman until the Ft. Smith streetcars shut down on November 3, 1933. After that, he opened his shoe shop. He had done some shoe repair as a young man. Once he left the street car line, a cousin George taught him what he needed to open his own shop. Shortly after opening his store downtown, a space came open at "The Junction",much nearer to the house, so he moved his store there. Granddad worked with him for several years before marrying and moving to California. Prior to working on the streetcar, Robert had worked in a steel foundry and had seriously injured his back. He and two other men were carrying a long steel beam. The man in the middle lost his grip and dropped his load. That left only Robert in the back and another man in the front. When the man in the front then lost his grip, Robert was injured, having his back muscles pretty badly torn. From then on, he was unable to do any sort of heavy lifting.

    Census:
I am skeptical of this record. There is another Robert Dickson who shows up in Texarkana that could be this person.

In the 1900 Census, Robert is enumerated as boarder and farm laborer east of Broken Bow, OK. One discrepancy is that his father is listed as being born in Georgia.

    Occupation:
I am skeptical of this record.

    Census:
Robert is listed as a lodger in the home of Bert E. Anderson.

    Census:
Between 1930 and 1935, the city of Fort Smith renumbered streets at Divison St. so that 14th St became 29th St.

This Minnie and Minnie Jones may be confused, especially since Granddad says Minnie Jones married a Shipplett.

    Notes:

The 1950 Census shows that Joe was never married.

    Birth:
Joe is shown with birth dates of 1897 and 1901. 1920 Census shows him to be 23 years old. That would coincide with a birth date of 1897. The 1900 Census shows July 1896. Another date given is 27 May 1901

Birth certificate shows birth of 10 Jul 1896. Shows his mother was 17 when he was born.

    Census:
Listed as a laborer with the CCC at the State Park

    Census:
Joe is noted as 41 years old in 1940. He is also listed as Dickson, Joe (ab), so he is presumably absent temporarily from the home.

    Military:
Seems like his name is odd here, too. Also, it looks like he took up additional initials in his name.

Is this actually Joe Dickson (from Millie McGrane's page) who was an Odd Fellow? Millie lists a Joe b. 1901, d. 1963, and McCurry Cemetery lists a Joe b. 1895 d. 1977. Which is which?

When were Cecil and Elzenia married? Was it a shotgun kind of thing?

Was the child really born before the wedding?

Millie McGrane has two sets of dates for this person. There must be two Lonnie's. She has one born Sept. 1902, d. 28 Jun 1916 and a second born 13 may 1901, d. 1983.

I think this is the first.

Lonnie is enumerated in the 1910 census, so this birth date of 1915 must be wrong.

MILITARY: Richard I. Dickson served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross as well as five Bronze Stars for his actions during the war. Richard enlisted 31 July 1942. (I can find nothing to back up Richard's decorations. This is based on a brief news article found in Ethel Garner's things. Researching this appears that it is a confusion with another Richard Dickson)

Richard and Louise had no children.

    From Cheryl Gilbert on Facebook:
    Hi Scott-
I don't really know much about Uncle Dick's WWII service. My dad was stationed in Europe and I seem to remember them talking about it, but I was a kid and didn't pay much attention.
Here is what I do know:
He and Aunt Louise both worked for the County of Los Angeles in the Flood Control District. They wanted to have kids, but were unable to. At one time they were going to adopt, which was a long and arduous undertaking back then. They had gotten close to the top of the list and they decided to move to a house with a bigger backyard. They had no idea that if you moved you had to start the whole process over again. They figured that by the time they got to the top of the list again they would be too old so they dropped it.
They always had dogs. I remember them having two cocker spaniels at one time and later on I think they had a golden retriever, but I'm not sure about that.
They both retired from the County in the late 70s (I think). I remember going to Uncle Dick's retirement dinner. Aunt Louise didn't have one as she had taken a medical retirement. She had polio as a child and even though there was no paralysis, she always had health problems. She died after a long illness and Uncle Dick was never the same after that.
About a year after she died he decided to go to Arkansas to visit family. He bought a new car for the trip. He was supposed to be gone 2-3 weeks and I thought he would call me when he got there, but I didn't hear from him. I waited about 3 /12 weeks and called; he said he got as far as the California border and was so lonely he turned around and came back. I guess he was too embarrassed to call and tell me.
In the last year of his life his health declined and he had been hospitalized a few times. The last time he was in the hospital I was there visiting and he told me that he thought it would be best if he went into a nursing home, at least for awhile and asked me to find one for him. I called the hospital the next day to see if they had an affiliation with a nursing home and he had died during the night. I was very upset that they didn't call me.
His best friend was named Norm Plater and he was also Uncle Dick's attorney and a fellow member of his Masonic Lodge. Norm made the arrangements for the Masonic funeral. Norm has probably passed away by now.
Uncle Dick had a great sense of humor and he and my dad were always pulling practical jokes on each other. I'm pretty sure that he played golf. I don't remember ever meeting any of his family.
That's all that I can remember right now.
Look forward to hearing from you on Facebook!

    Hi Scott-
Richard Dickson was my uncle my marriage; he was married to Louise Jones, who was my father's sister. I remember Uncle Dick very well. They lived fairly close to us in Southern California and we used to see them pretty often. I also spent time with them a few summers when I was a child. I assume that you know that he was very active in Masons (I seem to remember that he was a 32nd degree Mason) and had a Masonic funeral. He and my aunt are buried in Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Calif. I have visited the graves a few times.
I will be happy to share my family tree with you. I am working on the Jones line and finding it very frustrating as they repeated names in every generation. I think I have some pictures of Uncle Dick and Aunt Louise and will try to upload them.
If you're on Facebook my name is Cheryl Gilbert.

Robert served in the 40th Infantry Division of the US Army, 108th Battalion. Though he did not actively seek to enlist, due to the fact that he had two small children, when he was called for the draft, he did not seek deferment. He trained at Camp B. in Florida before shipping out to the Philippine Islands. He arrived on Leyte island in the spring of 1945 after the fighting in Europe had already ended and participated in battle there. Given the choice between being a machine gunner and an mortar man, he selected the mortar. He said that he would much rather be back behind the mountain than out in front just making the enemy mad. He was the 2nd gunner in an mortar team, carrying the mortar tube itself. His unit served in the Philippines through the end of hostilities and them moved to Korea in October 1945 to serve with the occupation forces there. During his time in Korea,Robert served as a truck driver.

While in the Army, Robert received his marksman medal, a good conduct medal, and campaign ribbons for the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and the Liberation of the Philippines Campaign. He served 16 months in the army and returned home in June 1946. His serial number from his dog-tag was 38732441 T44.

Granddad says that he and Grandmother met on June 8, 1938. They were at a church youth meeting. She knew who he was but he didn't know her. They met and talked. He walked her home, since she lived close to him. He walked her home the next week as well. After that, she was babysitting on a regular basis and would take the child she was babysitting to the drug store for a soda. He would meet up with her there and talk. After they met one another, they neither one ever dated anyone else.

Granddad died peacefully around 5pm on Monday, July 2, 2007.
