But, in 1860 and 1870, George is alone in the family of Mary's siblings. Did she die very early, earlier than believed? Did she run off? Was she in the mental hospital? Or what? To solve the problem of no consent, they sent a black man to the courthouse to get the marriage license. When he came back with it,they just crossed out the race, changed it to white, and got married.This marriage record has not yet been found, but it could be recorded as either black or white. Her first marriage could have been in Choctaw or Pontotoc Co, MS. After J.W.B. Tennyson died, she remarried to Mr. Phillips. After Elizabeth and Rebecca both died, either due to love or due to the practicalities involved, Matilda and Wesley married. Based on the 1900 Census, we know that Matilda was married to a Moore prior to being married to Wesley Hudson. We know that she had only a single child, Truely. Matilda is *not* the former Matilda Maner, though the age sort of fits. Matilda Maner married John C.. Landers and had a big family and is buried with him. She could be a Landers by birth, though.
