In trying to figure out where Ethel and Robert might have met,Granddad said that Ethel came to Ft. Smith from Yell County to attend a business college as a young woman. Presumably, that put her in Ft.Smith where she met Robert.

Granddad says that while his parents were never overly affectionate in public toward one another, it was always evident that they loved each other. He said that once in a while if he and Richard might come back from playing early, they would find their parents sitting on the porch with Ethel sitting in Robert's lap.

Jeff Garner's wife, Lucinda, applied for a Confederate Widow's pension in Arkansas on 1902-08-21. Her widow's number was 13750. According to the pension index, Jeff died in 1883. Also listed in Yell County are veterans Arch Garner & Columbus F. Garner.

Garners do not appear in the York County, SC deeds. On further examination of the tax lists and the census, they do not appear to actually own land.

Military:
Jeff Garner enlisted in Co. E, 5th Regt. South Carolina Infantry on April 13, 1861, just days after the first shots were fired at Ft. Sumter. Through 1862, Jeff Garner moved into Co H (the 2nd company) of the same regiment due to reorganization. Beginning in January 1863, he is listed as being detailed to "extra or daily duty at Brigade Quarter Master" rather than in the line with the rest of the men of the unit. Many of the cards list him as a wagonmaster during this time. Finally, he was paroled at Appomattox at the end of the war, having served the entire war with no indication of injury.

From the National Park Service Solidiers and Sailors database: "5th Infantry Regiment, assembled during March and April, 1861, contained men recruited in Laruens, Lancaster, Spartanburg, and Union counties. It was ordered to Virginia and, serving in D.R. Jones' Brigade, saw action at First Manassas. Later it was placed in General R.H. Anderson's, M. Jenkins', and Bratton's Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Fredericksburg, then served in Longstreet's Suffolk operations and with D.H. Hill in North Carolina. Moving again with Longstreet, the unit did not arrive in time to take part in the Battle of Chickamauga, but was engaged at Knoxville. Returning to Virginia, it was conspicuous at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, in the trenches of Petersburg, and around Appomattox. This regiment reported 3 killed and 23 wounded at First Manassas and totalled 650 men in April, 1862. It sustained 21 casualties at Williamsburg, 81 at Gaines' Mill, 73 at Frayser's Farm, 39 during the Maryland Campaign, and 102 at Wauhatchie. In 1864 it lost 18 killed, 95 wounded,and 16 missing during The Wilderness Campaign, and from June 13 to December 31, there were 11 killed and 65 wounded. On April 9, 1865, the unit surrendered 19 officers and 263 men. The field officers were Colonels A. Coward, John R.R. Giles, and Micah Jenkins; Lieutenant Colonels Andrew Jackson, G.W.H. Legg, and John D. Wylie; and Majors Thomas C. Beckham, William M.Foster, and William T. Thomson."

Mrs. Lucinda Garner, aged 84 years died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Moore, four miles south of this city Saturday morning. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. G. D. Faulkner, were held Sunday morning, after which interrment was made in New Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Garner had been a resident of Yell County since early pioneer days, making her home for many years near Danville. She was a noble, Godfearing woman, a devoted wife and a faithful, affectionate mother. She was mother of Mrs. George Moore, of near Dardanelle, Ike Garner, of near Danville, T.N. Garner, of Bryne, OK, and other children whose names we failed to learn. We join the friends of the family in extending our sympathy in their great loss.
There is no marker for Lucinda at the New Hope Cemetery.

Findagrave shows two different graves for Eliza - one in Yell Co., Arkansas, and a second in Oklahoma. She is not found in the 1920 census, but supposedly died in 1924 according to one entry, but 1920 according to the second.

There is a marker for her in Oklahoma but no marker in Arkansas, due to loss in the cemetery. I cannot come up with a good reason for there to be two markers, with one as a memorial marker, unless she is buried in Oklahoma and the memorial was in Arkansas.

The note in the Arkansas Findagrave indicates that her mother was Nancy T Menifee. So far as I can tell, she was Nancy T Stewart. The marriage record to Albert Huckaby says Miss Nancy Terilda Stewart and the last census before her death (1880) also says Huckaby, so she died a Huckaby with no remarriage. It could be she was married briefly before marrying Albert, since she was several years older than him. This merits some investigation

If she were in OK, then it seems she would have been with someone in her family there in 1920, but she was in AR for the 1920 census in April.

In my notes, I have that she is buried at the Dryden Cemetery in Hollis, Harmon Co., Oklahoma. I think this is likely my own data entry error. Will need to check my records.

Eliza L Huckaby's mother was Nancy T Menifee. I know the census say Mary. Eliza had a sister Terilda who was my gg grandmother. The family names were written down in 1906 and their mother is listed as Nancy T Menifee Huckaby.

In the 1850 census, enumerated with James and Libbi Page (age 33) , cut off from the bottom of the census image, but listed in the index, are John and Judith Vaughn, ages 79 and 68. These appear likely to be Elizabeth Vaughn's parents. They are listed as paupers. Perhaps John and Elizabeth are both dead.

Is it the case that Libbi is Elizabeth Vaughn who married John Page? She appears far too young in this case to be the right person. Moreover, some source claims that Elizabeth died in 1846, while I find an Elizabeth Page enumerated in 1860 in Union County, but not with children that match the family she and John supposedly had.

Patsy Page reports that she had 9 children, 2 of whom died as infants.

On the other hand, Randolph Vaughn in Union County made a will in 1830 and named his daughter Elizabeth. He only gives a first name, so it's not clear if she is a Page or not.

Look at the Noxubee County, Mississippi chancery & probate case files 674, 675, 676, 677. It's pretty clear that Alfred is son of William & Elizabeth Huckabee. But this will require a timeline of the probate papers to figure all of this out. All of these are on Family Search. Probate Minute index lays out timelines, mostly.

In Leake County, at the same time as Alfred is there, an Indian named Hacubee is selling land. This makes a little confusion. But there are no overlapping tracks that Hacubee buys or sells with Alfred Huckaby. Likewise, no DNA evidence for any Indian ancestors in this line exists.

Based on the 1880 Census, I would expect that perhaps Alfred married a second time to N. Her parents were from Scotland and Tennessee. His parents were from Virginia. Or Nancy and Mary were the same person. Seems more likely.

There is an Alfred Huckaby from Yell County who enlists in the 3rd US Cavalry, US Army in 1863. This could be the same person. Seems likely.

There is an A. Huckaby buried in Springdale, Washington County, died 1898 that could be the right person. However, there's no good reason for him to be there. When Alfred's 2nd wife died, there was no mention of him in her will. But it only pertained to property that she had owned beforehand.

However, the findagrave obituary for A.Huckaby indicated that he lived in Brentwood, Washington County, Arkansas. There are several Huckaby families in that area and no indication that Alfred ever lived there. Likewise, his wife died far too much earlier for the obituary to fit.

In the Yell County tax lists, I find A. Huckaby in 1885 (as expected) but not in 1887 or 1893. But he likely would have aged out of taxes as easily as he could have moved. However I do see I.A. Huckaby in Dardanelle Twp in the Dardanelle town special school district. None of these tax lists give any indication of age or any other identifying information for tax payers.

There is also a D.F. Huckaby family in Yell County that is prominent and seems likely to be connected.

History of New Hope Baptist Church
Dardanelle, Arkansas - Thursday, May 3, 1945

Way back in 1867, shortly after the close of the Civil War, New Hope Baptist Church was organized. A band of men and women from Bethel Church, located in another community of Yell County, met together for the purpose. The exact date was September 7th, 1867.

The name of those people may mean little to us now—it has been so long ago. Yet descendents of some of these pioneers are among the leading citizens of our county.

The Adams, Grace, Huckaby, Cole, Thomas, Cowger, Eidson, Jackson, Gateley, Dacus, Veazey, Brinson, and Banks families, and many others played leading parts in the early development of our County and its resources.

So the Church of New Hope was founded long before most of us were born.

It is interesting to note the difference of disciple of the early Church and our modern Church. To use a familiar expression, the members “had to walk the line.” If they did not do so, they found themselves on the outside. They had a rule then that forced attendance. If more than two Church Conferences were missed the guilty parties were called upon to give the reason why. Sounds odd, doesn’t it, to those of us in this present day.

And many were punished for taking part in worldly pleasures that pass unnoticed in this modern time.

The charter members of the New Hope Church had no building of their own to worship in at the beginning. They used an old log house nearby for about three years. This building was known as the “Old Chapel” or “Dobson Springs.” It was later used as a school house for many years. Many of the leading citizens of the county received their early education in this old cabin.

However, New Hope afterwards constructed a building of their own and worshipped there for about thirty-six years. They then constructed a two-story building in conjunction with the Odd Fellows Fraternal Order, each sharing equally in the cost. This building had a very tragic ending after about fifteen years’ use. On a Sabbath morning in March 1920, the church building burned A couple of youth met early that morning and attempted to start a fire in the heating stove. By mistake, they poured the contents of a gasoline can on the fire, causing an explosion. One of the youths, a boy named Ray Massey, was badly burned, and after several weeks of intense suffering, he died.

Again, the Church was without a place to worship, but they later constructed a modern frame building, and they still are using that today.

Space does not permit a complete list of Pastors who have served during the church’s 78 years of history, but we can say that New Hope has had some of the strongest preachers in the state, including L. R. Barnes, J. R. G. W. N. Adams, J. A. Meyers, Dr. (?) B. Searcy, W. E. Kimbourgh, G. (?) Faulkner, Chas. F. Wilkins, F. G. Dodson, who is now a Chaplain in the U. S. Army, Loyd Pryor and many others.

He present Pastor is Rev. Homer Bridges (?), a graduate of Ouachita College of Arkadelphia. He is also Pastor of the Dardanelle First Baptist Church.

So New Hope Baptist Church, with all its trials and difficulties, has been a power for good in the community and the surrounding country.

For several years now New Hope has been closely associated with the First Baptist Church of Dardanelle both being served by the same Pastor.

It may not be to the credit of the country Church in years gone by, but the membership paid their pastor very little salary, so they couldn’t be charged with preaching for the money. They learned, however not to depend upon their charges for a living, but supported themselves by hard labor. Civilization and Christianity owe much to those “old timers,” with their strict religious convictions and earnest Christian living. All honor to them!

Notes: This newspaper clipping was discovered between the pages of the Family Bible of my grandparents Roy and Vernie Eidson. now in my possession. It was yellowed and brittle with age. The condition of the clipping is seen in the photocopy, faded and torn in some places. The incident concerning gasoline on an open fire was a cautionary tale of my childhood.

A personal note. John Eidson listed herein as a charter member is my great grandfather. Also T. E. (Turilla) Huckaby, his future bride and my great grandmother is also listed. Among the former pastors listed is my uncle Dr. F. G. Dodson, husband of my aunt Nora Lee Eidson Dodson. Dodson, after an honorable discharge from the Army, completed his Doctorate at Golden Gate Seminary, Oakland, California. These four along with Roy and Vernie Eidson and several aunts, uncles and cousins are interred in New Hope Cemetery. See the list in the link referenced below.

One other note. The article states that Dobson Springs also served as a schoolhouse. It was indeed a one-room schoolhouse and my Daddy, Harold D. Eidson and his sister, Kitty Eidson Miles, were teachers there in the early 1920s after graduating high school. Frank Grace, long-time Committee Member for New Hope Cemetery, told me stories of being taught by Daddy at the Dobson Springs school. One story Frank told happened when he was a first grader. It seems a thunderstorm blew in with heavy lightning and thunder. Frank was so frightened that he bolted out the front door on foot for the safety and comfort of home and Momma. Daddy went after him on horseback to retrieve him and bring him safely back to school to finish the day.

Unfortunately, Book F is not available online so I cannot see who signs as wife. Presumably Sarah A Keller.

Died:
Alfred Huckaby may have sold all of his property by 1886. His second wife had her estate in probate with no mention at all of him in any way. That indicated that he must have pre-deceased her. But, to date, no record of his death has been found.

There is a grave stone in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas for an A. Huckaby, b 1822, d 1898. But there are also many Huckaby families in Washington County. This is 100 miles away with no good reason for this to be his grave. Moreover, there is a short obituary that says he wife had recently died. Alfred's wife died in 1888, ten years previous. I can find no reason to believe the Springdale grave is his.

Alfred married Nancy Terilda Stewart on 15 Dec 1839 in Noxubee, Mississippi, United States.
