    Notes:

Joseph and his parents may legitimately be missed in the 1930 census. In Weymouth, ED 11-139, the enumerations completely omits 246 Washington St. where the family lived for many years before and after.

Joseph married Alma Beatrice Ross on 16 Jul 1932 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Alma (daughter of Charles Franklin Ross and Cora Stetson Hooper) was born on 9 Feb 1905 in Brockton, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; died on 21 Nov 2001 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried on 24 Nov 2001 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Notes:

    Birth:
Somewhere I got his birth year as 1909, but the birth is recorded as 1910.

    Census:
In the 1910 Census, Francis is listed as 1 month old, so I would think he was really born in 1910 rather than 1909 as otherwise reported.

Francis married Lillian Helen Moriarty on 25 Jun 1939 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Lillian (daughter of Daniel David Moriarty and Ellen Shea) was born on 30 Sep 1905 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; died on 17 Jan 1991 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Census:
The 1920 census says that the entire family except the father was born in Vermont for some reason.

    Notes:

In the 1930 Census, the enumerator moves down Washington St. in ED 11-139 and skips right past 246 Washington St. Perhaps Michael and Nellie were temporarily living elsewhere, or the just not at home.

    Birth:
On the birth record, it records Michael F. Boyle as the son of John & Margaret Farley, but this just appears to be the way that the clerk has recorded things rather than an indication that "John Farley" was the father. The town birth record is for 1869 rather than 1868 (as seen elsewhere).

    Baptism:
Joseph A. Boyle and Catherine Boyle are sponsors.

    Census:
Michael is listed as a shoemaker in the 1900 census.

    Census:
Patrick and Bridgette Callahan are living next door.

    Census:
In 1940, Michael is listed as a cutter in a shoe factory.

Michael married Ellen Theresa Callahan on 30 Jan 1902 in Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Ellen (daughter of Patrick Callahan and Bridget H. Lyons) was born on 26 May 1872 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; died in 1947 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Notes:

According to the 1920 Census, Nellie's parents were from Ireland.

    Census:
The 1910 Census records Nellie has having had only one child, with one child still living. Perhaps the child registered as dead was considered a miscarriage since it was born dead.

    Census:
In 1920, Nellie reports that she was born in Massachucetts but that both her parents were born in Ireland.

    Died:
In the 1953 Weymouth city directory, it lists Nellie as Michael Boyle's wife, even though she had already died.

    Notes:

    Married:
One record says this was in Weymouth, but it's in the Randolph town records.

    Children:
    1. 4. Joseph Francis Boyle was born on 8 Mar 1904 in Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; died on 11 Mar 1967 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States.
    2. Boyle was born on 16 Dec 1904 in Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; died on 16 Dec 1904 in Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States.

  3. 10.  Charles Franklin Ross was born on 18 Mar 1879 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States (son of Henry C. Notes:

According to the family story, Charlie Ross left the family in 1907, leaving Cora with three small daughters.

I am beginning to suspect that the Charlie F. Ross who married Fannie White might not be the right person.

In 1910, there is a Charles Ross living in Brockton that is the right age and may well be this Charles. He and his wife of three years, Fannie, are living as boarders in the home of Aaron Burnham. This would coincide with his abandonment of his family in 1907. It would mean that either he chose to remarry without getting a divorce or he and Cora were divorced. This needs further research. At the time of the 1910 Census, he was living only a few blocks away from his daughter Rotha, who was separated from the rest of the family.

It appears that sometime around 1907, Charles left the family - his wife and children. By 1910, he was close by living as husband and wife with Fannie White, but they had not yet married. In 1916, they married in Vermont and settled there as if they had never married before.

However, the parents listed on the Charles Ross / Cora Hooper marriage record do not match the ones for the Charles Ross / Fannie White record in Vermont. So far, I cannot find Charles in any record prior to his 1900 census, nor can I find either set of parents

Ross / Hooper set - Henry C Ross and Mary Paulding
Ross / White set - George F Ross and Elizabeth W Baldwin

While the marriage of Cora and Charles took place in Whitman, there are no Whitman records in the Mass. Town & Vital Records Collection.

2020-01-14 - Just because the marriage register for Charles & Cora lists their parents, that does not mean that their parents are still alive. They could already be dead. I do find an Henry A.C. Ross on the pauper roles around 1900. But there is no reason to connect him. Finding an 1880 census record in Boston would really help.

    Birth:
The statewide index to births lists a Charles (twin) born in 1879 in Boston, volume 306, page 23. The only other twin born in 1879 in Boston is Martha W, also on the same page of the registry. However, these are the children of Citifore and Mary Ross, a black couple.

Though, I don't necessarily believe a lot else about Charles, on both his WWI and WWII draft cards, he gives his birthday at 18 Mar 1879 and is generally consistent in saying he was born in Boston.

    Census:
Charles is a boarder in 1900 and is listed as a driver. Interestingly, he is living at 65 Pleasant St, at the corner of Pleasant and Thayer St. His mother-in-law was Salome Thayer.

    Census:
In 1910, Charles is listed as a boarder with Fannie Ross in Brockton. This seem sort of questionable as there are 2 additional marriage records for him in Rhode Island and in Vermont in Nov 1916.

They both claim this as a first marriage. Looks like someone else provided the data. It appears that Charlie divorced Cora and married Fannie.

Moreover, Fannie is really Fannie White and could be related to Fred White (does not appear to be the case).

    Census:
This census records that he was 26 at the time of his first marriage. However, he would have been 21 when he and Cora married and 37 when he and Fannie married.

    Census:
This records says that Charles only completed 5th grade and that Fannie had 1 year of High School. They rent the house for $35/month. Both work in a shoe factory.

    Residence:
    Found at the same address in 1945, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1957, 1961

    Misc:
I think this is the date when he claimed social security, not when he died. He shows up in city directories until the early 1970s.

    Census:
Charles is 71, Fannie is 65, both from Massachusetts. He made $1400 for the year and has not served in the military.

    Died:
Mrs. Fannie White Ross is the informant, but she provides no details for his parents at all. But that does indicate that this is the same Charles F. Ross who was in Brockton, Mass in 1910.

Charles married Cora Stetson Hooper on 26 Jan 1901 in Whitman, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States, and was divorced on 10 Oct 1910 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Cora (daughter of Walter S. Hooper and Sarah Oldham Peterson) was born on 31 Aug 1879 in South Abington, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; died on 25 Jun 1980 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Whitman, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. In the 1910 Census, he is enumerated as Donald D., age 37, giving a birth date of 1873. He immigrated in 1893 and was naturalized.

In the 1920 Census, he is listed as having immigrated in 1886 and was naturalized in 1900. Ellen is not in the house, having died in 1914. They are the second family living at 12 Perkins St. The other family is that of Michael Sheehan. For some reason all of the children are listed as being born in Vermont, which is absolutely not the case. Also, in this census, he is listed as speaking Irish as his first language and being 54 years old. Perhaps someone else answered for them in this case.

In the 1930 Census, he has moved next door to 14 Perkins St. and is still next door to the Sheehans, though Michael is no longer there. His widow Ellen is head of household.

    Notes:

    Married:
Marriage was witnessed by Patrick Moriarty (Daniel's brother) and Mary Shea (Ellen's sister?).

The state record of the marriage dates it to 20 Apr 1897 while the church dates it 21 Apr 1897. Both record the record on 22 Apr 1897. I presume that 21 Apr is the marriage and 20 Apr is the license date.

    Notes:

It appears that perhaps Margaret's family came to the US prior to 1850 since they are not found in the 1850 census.

Since I find Margaret in the 1910 Census but not the 1920 Census (yet), I suspect that she died between 1910 and 1920.

    Birth:
In the 1930 census, Margaret's children John, Catherine, and Alice report that she is from Northern Ireland.

    Immigration:
Margaret immigrated as a child, presumably with her parents, in 1851, according to the 1900 Census.

    Census:
According to the 1900 Census, Margaret is a widow. She has had 8 children, of whom, 7 are still living. That means that either John or Joseph died between 1880 and 1900.

    Census:
The 1910 census lists Margaret and her parents as from Ir. English, rather than just Ireland. I believe this was done to distinguish Northern Ireland from Ireland.

She is listed as having had 8 children, 7 of whom are alive.

    Notes:

    Married:
Marriage record says Margaret's mother was Catherine McLaughlin, but it seems more likely to have been Sheridan.

Arrived at New York, 1 Jun 1863. Petition for Naturalization in Boston on 4 Nov 1876. Found in Massachusetts, State and Federal Naturalization Records, 1798-1950

    Census:
In 1880, there are seven families enumerated at dwelling 73 in Weymouth with Patrick and his family. Either this was an apartment house or a real mess. Both Patrick and Bridget report that they and their parents are from Ireland.

    Census:
In 1910, Patrick and Bridget are enumerated next door to their daughter Nellie and her husband Michael F. Boyle. In 1900, it was noted that Patrick and Bridget were married 30 years. Here, they are married 38 years. He is listed as immigrating in 1870 instead of 1868 and she in 1866. This means that they were likely married in Massachusetts and came separately.

    Census:
By 1920, Patrick is no longer listed as head of household. He is residing in his son's home. Bridget is gone, presumably dead. He is list as immigrating in 1867 and being naturalized in 1870.

Patrick married Bridget H. Lyons on 10 Jul 1870 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Bridget (daughter of Patrick Lyons and Mary Scanny) was born in Aug 1848 in Ireland; died on 15 Jan 1913 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried on 17 Jan 1913 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. Bridget Lyons, age 19, arrival aboard the Aleppo in Boston, 5 Oct 1868 (from Liverpool). Seems most likely.

    Census:
1900 Census reports that Bridget and Patrick were married in about 1870 (30 years in 1900) and that Bridget had had 6 children, four of whom where still living. Her naturalization status is covered by her husband's.

    Census:
In 1910, Bridget is listed as 65 years old and Michael is 55. Her age is more close to correct, but his is wrong. She also reports having had 7 children, of whom 4 are living rather than 6 children.

Bridgette reports that that she immigrated in 1866.

    Notes:

So far, we have not yet found a death date for Sarah. She does not appear in the Massachusetts 1920 or 1930 census. Nor in the town records or death indexes. It seems unlikely that she moved away but we have not found a death record.

There is a story in the Boston Globe about a Sarah Hooper, elderly (62 years), paralytic, who was being transported to the state hospital at Tewksbury and got stuck in a hearse for 8 hours. But, our Sarah Hooper is in Whitman in 1917-1920.

    Census:
Sarah is enumerated in her father's home in 1900. There is a Benjamin F. Peterson next door who may be an older brother. She is listed as divorced and as having 3 children, all three of whom are still living. Sarah notes that she had three children, all of whom are still living in 1910.

    Census:
In 1910, Sarah is living as a boarder. She reports that she is a widow and that 2 of her 3 children are living.

    Notes:

    Married:
This is Sarah's 2nd marriage. She was previously married to Merrow.

    Notes:

I have always heard Ronualde or seen his name this way, but Phillipe's marriage record says Remerl and has the same for his middle name. LDDM says his name was in fact Romaulde. I think I believe the marriage records, though.

There seems to be some confusion as to the two wives of Romaulde Doucet. The LDDM says his first wife, and the mother of all of his children was Helene LeBlanc and his second wife was Bridget Roger. However, they give a marriage date of 23 Feb 1870 for the second marriage. Five children were born by the time of the second marriage and 9 additional after the date of the second marriage.

    Name:
We see this variation in the Nova Scotia records.

    Census:
In the 1891 Census, there is an addition Marcelin Doucet, age 26, and wife Olive in the home. I cannot tell their relationship to the head of the household. Two doors down is Pete Doucet, age 54.

Remerl married Bridget Rogers on 23 Feb 1870 in Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada. Bridget (daughter of Jean-Baptiste Rogers and Callista Benit) was born in 1851 in Nova Scotia, British North America; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Somewhere, we thought this person was Camiol D. Larned, from an oldpaper provided by Joan Carlton. Daniel Moriarty's birth certificate(registration) says otherwise.

    Birth:
According to the 1900 Census, she was born in 1833. According to the 1910 census, she was born in 1830. And according to her death certificate, she was born in 1844.

Apparently, no one really knew how old Ellen was. In 1901 in his life insurance application, Daniel said that his mother was living and 80 years old.

Joan Carlton has settled on 1833. That makes most sense to me as well.

    Census:
According to the 1900 census, Ellen immigrated in 1893 and 5 of her 6 children were alive. She is listed as 67 years old with a birth date of Jan 1833. This means she ages 13 years between censuses, but that she loses 10 or 11 years on her death certificate. Based on the address, this is the same family, but the age is still a question.

In 1900, Ellen reports that she arrived in 1893.

    Census:
In the 1910 census, Ellen is listed as 80 years old (clearly a guess since her death certificate says 67). Five of her six children are still living and she is reported to have arrived in the U.S. in 1895. She is living in her daughter Abbie's home.

    Notes:

In 1901, Daniel, Ellen's son, says that he had 3 sisters, aged 37, 39, and 41 still living, none dead, and 2 brothers aged 31 and 35 and none dead.

    Married:
Some notes say the marriage was about 1860. This calls into question Mary's birth date.

    Children:
    1. Mary Moriarty was born in 1855 in Kerry, Ireland; died on 25 Jan 1927 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.
    2. Abbie Moriarty was born in May 1863 in Kerry, Ireland; died on 17 Mar 1937 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.

    Notes:

Michael might have come to the US prior to 1840 but after 1830. There is one family - John Boyle - where Michael might fit in the 1830 census of Randolph, but there is no real proof that it is.

It appears that Michael remarried after Rosanna died. He and his second wife appear in the 1870 and possibly the 1880 census, as well as the 1865 Massachusetts State Census. I still have not found a marriage record for them or a death record.

Looks like the extant records for Clonbroney start around 1828.

    Notes:

John appears to be out of the picture, most likely having died, by the 1855 census. I do not find him in any US Census. Perhaps he arrived and died soon after that.

According to his daughter, Margaret, she immigrated in 1851 (or 1850 in one census).

There may be another son, John, born about 1834. John lives next door in the 1860 census.

    Died:
John is not enumerated with the family in the 1860 census.

John married Catherine Sheridan. Catherine (daughter of Patrick Sheridan and Elizabeth Gerrity) was born in 1805 in Ireland; died on 13 Oct 1870 in Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Census: 15 Jun 1860, Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States
    • Census: 2 Jul 1870, Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States

    Notes:

Several records indicate that Catherine's maiden name was Sheridan. Only a marriage registry record for John Boyle says McLaughlin.

    Name:
The marriage record for John Boyle and Margaret Farley (her daughter) says McLaughlin. The death record and other records for her children say Sheridan.

Her death record has an odd notation that calls out her maiden name along with her married name.

    Census:
Catherine appears to be with her family, headed by her son Barnard. They live 2 doors down from Terrence Dargan.

    Children:
    1. Bernard Farley was born on 20 Dec 1828 in Ireland; and died.

It is not clear that John & Mary immigrated to the US. Patrick may have come alone as a young man. While they do not appear to be deceased when he marries (Bridget's parents are listed as dec'd and Patrick's are not), they may not have come with him.

    Residence:
    Widow of Cornelius Hooper

    Census:
Salome P. Hooper is listed in Walter S. Hooper's household, but she is listed as a widow, no children, and Walter's aunt. But, she must really be his mother.

    Buried:

    Notes:

Franklin is listed in the censuses as a farmer. In 1860, his farm is described in the non-population schedule.

In 1880, Franklin is listed as a widower.

Preliminary research on this line looks like it goes back to Plymouth in the early 1600s.

    Census:
In the 1900 Census, he is listed as Single. Is that correct, or should it really say Widowed? There is no mother present in the house. Both he and his parents are listed as being from Massachusetts.

Franklin married Almira Stetson on 10 Jan 1833 in Abington, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. He was an ironworker, a gunsmith by trade. In early life he shipped on a whaling vessel and was wrecked on the Sandwich Islands, where his skill in ironwork saved his life. But he was guarded whenever a vessel was in port so that he could not escape for quite a length of time. He at length succeeded
in getting away and returning home. The time and place of his death are not known to his descendants.

    From Hooper Genealogy:
    2. Joseph (John, John, John, John, William), born at Bridgewater, Dec. 24, 1780; married at Duxbury, March 15, 181 1, Jerusha, daughter of Cornelius and Jerusha (Bryant) Ellis, born at Middleborough, April 19, 1781, died at Bridgewater,
    Jan. 20, 1870.

    Birth:
There is a note in the Bridgewater list of births for
"Jerusha, w. Joseph Hooper, Apr 19, 1783" that is cited from a private record group.

The Compiled Birth, Marriage, and Death transcription lists him as Job. I suspect that is a transcription error.

    Census:
There are three Joseph Hoopers and a John Hooper in Bridgewater in 1830. I believe that means dad, son, uncle, and grandson.

    Enumeration (Joseph Hooper 2nd): 0010001-0001001
    Enumeration (John Hooper): 00001001-000000001
    Enumeration (Joseph Hooper): 000010001-00001
    Enumeration (Joseph Hooper Jr): 000001-100001

So, I am not certain which of these 3 is Joseph, but one I believe is.

    Died:
Jerusha is listed as a head of household in the 1840 census, implying that she is widowed. By 1850, she is listed as a widow.

Joseph married Jerusha Ellis on 15 May 1811 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Jerusha (daughter of Cornelius Ellis and Jerusha Bryant) was born on 19 Apr 1781 in Middleboro, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; died on 20 Jan 1870 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States.
